30 days to go.
I will be flying out of SFO for South Africa for the third time. This trip will be a little of everything. Half the time will game drives and the rest will be a little be of everything else ...i.e. people, shops etc. will travel to Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
I'm all packed and ready to go. Main gear will be my canon ef 100-400 with 1x4 ext with a R6 body.
At 87 this may be my last trip. The 24 hour flight is no fun.
I will be flying economy and if you want a window seat it is an extra $27.00. Before you know it they are going to have paid crappers.
Good luck and have fun. I don't envy your flight. I often fly 3 hours to my daughters home and I hate most every minute of it. Flying to my sons is just 1.5 hours, and that is about as long as I can stand.
I would not even consider flying 24 hours, even at my young age of 77.
I have often wondered how airlines these days have the cajones to charge for a seat. Like you can do anything with the flight and no where to sit...
There should be some kind of a law against such nonsense.
Have a safe and uneventful trip and take lots of images to share with us.

You have my admiration (and envy). I’m only 77 and wouldn’t consider the trip after 2 MIs, especially the 24 hour flight.Africa and its wonders will be a great reward for the discomfort of the air travel. Safe travels and return with many great images to post. Just remember - extra batteries (and cards)!

I would almost think an aisle seat to get up and stretch and easily get out to head to the john would be perfect. I have another photog friend who got a blood clot flying a long distance.
As a matter of fact I talked to United and because of my age they changed me to an aisle set at no extra charge. I will traveling with OAT for this 17 day trip.
To help prevent blood clots, of course get up and walk some - you can "toe up" while you are sitting that exercises the calf a little where the clots originate. They can travel to the lungs and be deadly.
I envy you! Enjoy the trip, I hope you’re staying for several weeks to compensate for the air travel length. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate on the flights!
That sounds like fun.
Are you going to bring a camera?
Are you going to ask us which one you should bring?
Enjoy your trip and I look forward to seeing Africa through your lens. Once upon a time, White Castle had five-cent pay toilets.
actually I believe that there is an plan to start charging for air. The cabin can be filled with nitrogen so fires will not be a problem and you will put quarters into a box to get air through a mask. Or they will give you a tank that will last for the flight plus 10 minutes so the flights had better not be late.
We know this woman who was recently in Africa, when she should have been to the southern border instead. Ahhh...where her priorities are all screwed up!
