After reading this cartoon, I checked online to see if there was any truth in it. Yep! Banana peels were a danger in NYC when they first arrived. Bananas were something new to New Yorkers because it took so long to ship them that they went bad during the trip. When someone discovered a better way to transport them - on the open deck of the ship - New Yorkers could eat bananas. Interesting story linked below.

My father was from a very very small rural town in central Texas. He once told me that when the local grocery received it's first bananas people complained about how difficult the bananas were to eat. They didn't realize that the banana peel was supposed to be removed.
