Are You Afraid of Falling?

"Are You Afraid of Falling?" What kind of a question is that? It's the kind you find on a medical questionnaire, and it got me laughing.

I went for my annual "Wellness Exam" yesterday, and that was one of the questions on the paper. As I was reading it, the nurse and a trainee called me into the exam room. I asked them how anyone could answer it. "No, I look forward to falling down." "Yes, I'm afraid to get out of a chair for fear of falling." That got the three of us laughing. It was an unusual visit, with the three of us doing a lot of laughing. The medical profession is full of laughs, if you look hard enough.

Another question:

"Do you wear you seatbelt Usually, Rarely, Never?" How about "Always"?

The doctor mentioned that one to me as being poorly worded.

I was sorry to hear that my doctor will be limiting his work to two or three days a week. I've been going to him for decades.

I had my wellness visit yesterday also and my paperwork ask some stupid questions that would be easy to lie about and they probably would never know the differance. If it were not a must to get my diabetic supplies I would only go if I had a problem, I get tired of waiting to be called in just to sit and wait for another period of time just to spend 10-12 minutes with my Dr.

"Are You Afraid of Falling?" What kind ... (show quote)

About a month ago I went for some X-rays and was asked by the receptionist "what do you identify as"? My mind went into overdrive...a giraffe...Robert Redford...a red balloon...the pronoun of my choice...we laughed and went on to the next question after rolling our eyes a bit. Nothing about seat belts though.

Yeah, that's getting to be a tricky situation - the right pronouns.

I once came across that same question and I gave the standard response, "It's not the falling it's the abrupt landing that frightens me."

In the same vein; when I was teaching, I had privy to my students records, one student had an IEP (Individual Education Program), essentially a modification of normal classroom activities because they were diagnosed with a learning disability - The learning disability: Test Anxiety! Doesn't everyone have test anxiety?
The way I see it, you have got to be VERY smart or taking a lot of Prozac, not to have test anxiety.

I enjoy joking around with my nurse practitioner as she goes through the list of questions required during my wellness exam. My favorite one is, "Have you ever had thoughts of suicide?" I respond, "Suicide, never. Murder, often!"

Jerry, the question is a medically legitimate one. It centers around determining if the patient is apprehensive about falling due to possible balance or peripheral neuropathy issues.
Thank your lucky stars you don’t have that. I walk 3-4 miles everyday but am still concerned about falling due to balance issues.
