Getting back up to speed with PS and LR

After putting most of my photography including editing on hold due to family health issues I’ve found some time to get back into it on a limited basis. I’ve renewed my PS subscription and like most things it has changed since my last version which I think was around 7 or 8 years ago. The Kelby Photoshop for photographers’ book I last used is CS5. My first question is how much of the info in my CS5 book such as edits, filters etc. can be used with current software including LR? I was on the road for months at a time and had time to practice and learn from others and became comfortable with it. I respect the opinion of those on this sight and would appreciate any thoughts on getting back up to speed and which publications would be a good starting point using the new software including LR.

Adobe has many free on-line videos to help you get back up to speed on LR and PS. There are also several digital wizards who offer tutorials for little or no cost on-line. If you poke around a bit, you’ll find lots of help from recognized teachers, even on YouTube.

Lightroom has recently added new AI driven features. It can identify and select persons, objects, etc. Then adjust just that thing selected, meaning less need for photoshop masking. You can now do HDR and Panos in Lightroom. Sharpening is much improved. I'm spending less and less time in photoshop, but I still absolutely need it for a few things. Thankfully, Lightroom and Photoshop come as a single package. So definitely check out the available videos!

Use the Adobe tutorials and I also recommend Anthony Morganti.

You're paying for access to Adobe's training videos along with the software. Sign into their site, access Help & Support, and then Learning Resources.

I very much appreciate you guys input. I have briefly looked around at a few learning aids from Adobe and youtube. I have duel monitors so I think that would adapt quite well. One another subject, I'm in the process of de-cluttering in order to down size. My grandson noticed a set of 50 pound bookshelf speakers in the trash pile and asked "where is the Bluetooth synch button?". When I caught my breath I pointed to the two clips on the back and told him about 30 years from now. He loaded them in his Mustang to take home. What a funny/sad moment. Thanks again guys.

LR is not related to PS; no layers or masking (although some form of masking has recently been added to LR). As for PS; features have been added but the basic layer concept is still alife. Get an updated book on PS, and check YouTube for hints on processing with LR.

I second the recommendation to use the free on line tutorial videos and tips. I started using PS with CS4 years ago. About 13 years ago I started using LR and now I use LR for over 95% of my workflow. For the other small % I start in LR (like ACR) then send to PS via "Edit In" to do that extra then return to LR. LR's recent AI masking capabilities are pretty impressive. Your past knowledge of PS and experience will give you a head start, although the look and feel of current PS has changed.
