Today I saw Adorama has a D780 (used, very good V for $1299) for sale. I am still using my D610 with many OK lens.
Is it a good deal and should I care about its shutter count? Can anyone tell me what would I expect to see the difference if I update to that model?
I have an issue, I would bring my X-T10 and Insta360 x3 for my coming trip to China because of their portability. I don't want to carry too many lens for travelling because of my age.

12 frames per second versus 6. Uncropped 4K video at 30 fps. Phase detect autofocus in the Live View mode, which means no hunting to lock onto a subject and much better video when using autofocus. Better low light performance. Also faster and more reliable autofocus.

You wont see a difference.
But if you want a better SLR the D780 is your last opportunity. As better cameras come along they obviously wont be SLRs.
I would buy a used D850. Save just a bit more

Unless you plan to use the camera for video. In that case, the D780 is superior. The contrast detection autofocus of the D850 in the Live View and video modes hunts as a subject moves around unless you use manual/fixed focus. Pictures taken with the D850 can be stunning and allow for considerable cropping, but there is no one DSLR that has everything one might need when you factor in video. Also, the D850 can only shoot at 7 FPS without the battery grip and the same battery used in the Z9. Then you can get 9 FPS. The D780 tops out at 12 FPS.
.
As the replies pile up, seems the D610 will look more and more like a keeper. The next several pages will tell the tale.

You are probably right, unless the stock market goes up just like today for another day.
One 24MP full-frame Nikon DSLR to another 24MP full-frame Nikon DSLR? For $1300?? Not a reasonable change. Just GAS.

The D780 is Nikon's most advanced DSLR, and the D610 is a slug in comparison. Sometimes a slug will do, and if the OP is happy and can't think of a specific reason to upgrade, then I agree it's just GAS.

Although the D780 represents Nikon's best and final thinking on the capabilities of a 24MP full-frame DSLR, I think the D750 - used / discontinued - is a better buying option, if one was determined to buy still another 24MP full-frame Nikon DSLR. Hopefully, our OP will look again at their existing D610 and will defer spending more money until after this camera dies, on a still far off date.

And the d750 has a pop-up flash.
"Upgrade" from a D610 should be in as many dimensions as the current market offers. Yes, the D780 is quite a step up from the D610, and if a 24mp DSLR is all you'll ever want, go for it. But, when you look at all the advances presented with, oh, say, the Z7II, THAT would be a real upgrade. Not in a rush, waiting for another generation or two from Nikon mirrorless before adding those newer-features kit to my, "won't-let-go-of-it" D750 etc. stockpile...
