This is a warning to anyone with a debit card/checking account. I just checked my account online (as I do almost every day) and there was a charge of a small amount (under five dollars) from a business I never heard of. When I called the bank the person told me this could be typical of an attempted theft. What happens is that a thief gets ahold of the debit card number (easy to do) and they attempt a very small charge, hoping it gets ignored and processed. They hope it will not be noticed by the card holder, but it tells the thief that it is an active account and the holder is not very vigilant. Then they attempt a larger charge and if that goes through they get larger and larger. This could have been an honest error but best to be careful. Please all, check your accounts closely and often and report any charges unknown to you!!

Amazing the number of scammers out there. I have had a few of those.
It seems like the Covid thing has opened the scammer floodgates. Every day I get 10-20 scam emails from sources claiming to be sending me an order and to email back or call back to cancel the order. They are trying to gain information from you. If you click on anything including the "unsubscribe" button then they know that this is a valid email and to send you more junk.

The person that got hold of my card number wasn't so sly and decided to order a barbecue grill, karate supplies and fill his gas tank. Luckily, my bank caught it, stopped it and notified me.
I suspect that someone with a card reader walked by me and caught my number. I now have an RFID protecting wallet and the cross body bag I carry the wallet in protects also.
I check my accounts often, too. I don't use ATMs; if I need money I cash a check at the bank.

I had a couple during the past week. The first was for $91.00 and the second for $71.00.
My bank caught them. They canceled the first one on their own as it appears to be a well known scam...a charge from AT&T Dallas TX.
Their fraud department called me yesterday. I thought they were calling about the first one but it was to verify the second charge. I told them I made no such purchase.
They canceled my debit card and are sending me a new one. It should take about a week to arrive. Until then I can go to my branch and get a temporary that will work at their ATMs but not for purchases.
It's a pure shame all the hoops we have to jump thru to try to be safe these days. For me it was a pain having to wait to get my card replaced. The internet has done SOO many good things but it has also opened up many opportunities for scams. Think of all the people that are not as vigilant as most of us are. I feel sorry for all the people that get caught up in one of the many phone scams. My step-father, in his nineties, got a call saying it was his grandson and needed money. Luckily my dad didn't respond with the grandson's name. He was smart enough (or confused enough) to hang up and call one of my sisters nearby, whose husband is a retired LEO. Be careful out there.

Scammers know that younger generations do not closely monitor their banking accounts. They don't write checks, preferring to use credit cards and debit cards. Thus they keep no check register. They do not balance their accounts. They do not monitor their charges. Many do not even look at their bank statements.
I keep my debit card in my aluminum wallet 24/7 except when using it. I have never lost or misplaced it but somehow, someone posing as a Jack Zarr tried to make a purchase at a Walgreens in Maine using my card number. It was a real hassle trying to get this fixed and get my new card. My bank was suspicious since I'm in NC. and have never even been to Maine. These scammers must try a combination of numbers day and night to find one that works.
We went through 3 or 4 of one of our cards in less than 18 months. One day I received a call, and the person identified himself and asked if perchance I had spent $242 on electronics in New Jersey, and at the same time spent $250 on clothing in California? He knew the answer already, but I told him no, I hadn't made those purchases. We had a new card and number two days later.
