I've been on a youtube binge lately watching videos of vocal instructors commenting on various music videos. For someone who appreciates music but hasn't had vocal training, it is interesting to watch the voice teachers reacting to these videos and commenting on their technique. (Search for 'The Vocalyst' on Youtube, for example. Lorna Shore's 'To the Hellfire' leaves her nearly speechless, as does the one with Mongolian throat singing.)
Anyway, that led me to discover Disturbed's cover of "The Sound of Silence", which takes this song in a somewhat different direction than the original. Not as 'heavy metal' as most of their work, it seems.

I am definitely not into heavy metal or piercings but I have to admit this is pretty good. I do like the original better but this is enjoyable.
Surprising! Always remarkable when you keep your mind open and under the premise of seeing someone in the light of professionalism watch them perform. The man has a remarkable ability - and 3/4 through you can see his normal style come out as the more guttural intensity prevalent in metal. The wife occasionally coerces me to see one of "her" preferred musical acts and I am often surprised then too. A pro is a pro for a reason. They have the versatility and capability - they may have just chosen a genre that isn't your style. Of course I am still waiting to see a group of rappers be able to sing a Four Tops medley with harmony.
Not sure about the rappers, but the hip-hop artists could probably do it, though really tight four-part harmony is challenging, especially if you don't want it to go 'barbershop'.
I actually liked the performance on Conan better, the music video was distracting.
My wife is into ballet, I'm more into opera. We both enjoyed Stravinsky's "The Firebird" when it was here a couple of seasons ago, with the St. Louis Symphony and the American Ballet Theatre.
She can handle Gilbert and Sullivan and something like "The Marriage of Figaro" but not the heavier Italian or German operas.
I would love to have the time and money to go see a Ring Cycle in Chicago, New York or even Bayreuth.
I like Art and Paul's version better.
The original version, without the added rock tracks, was not a big hit. When it started to get some air play, the producer added those tracks without the group's permission and re-released it.
I was a freshman in college when The Graduate came out, that music just exploded on campus, you heard it from nearly every dorm room.

You should listen to to Pentatonix cover. IMO the only one better than the Disturbed cover.
Interesting, thanks. I like how they use their voices to replace the piano. I was concerned at first that it was going to go a bit too 'country'.
Thank you for sharing this terrific version of this song with us. I heart this man sing it when it first came out and I can't say enough about his style at least for this song anyway. I like it just as much if not more than I did when I first heard Simon and Garfunkel sing it so many years ago.
Thanks Again, David
I tend to listen to a lot of French singers, to help me improve my ear for listening to French. So much of what's out on the Internet, at least on Sirius/XM, is really easy listening stuff, but this one has such a tortured vocal that it is almost spoiled by reading the translation.
This is Löic Nottet.
