Can you use a thumb drive directly on a Canon 50D in lieu of the CF or save to both at the same time? I need to upload images to a photo printer in the field and continue shooting while printing images from the thumb drive?
Thanx, Irve

If your printer will accept them, I suggest multiple cards and a card reader. I don't know about your camera/computer/printer set up, but if compatible you might look into tethering.
For my own information, what do you mean by "in the field?" might help with better suggestions.

In the middle of a sporting event and need immediate 4x6" color pix. I will print images from the thumb drive and continue on shooting on another thumb drive. I know that I can accomplish the same from the CF card(s).
Having the USB thumb drive allows me the utility of many different style printers.

Have you thought of using a wireless system. I do this with Nikon cameras and Camera Control Pro 2. From the time I get the shot to the completed print is less than 2 minutes.

No. There's no USB port on any Canon body that I know of. Besides, the memory slot door must be closed for the camera to function and if there were some kind of adapter you'd never get a thumb drive to fit while closing the memory card door.

But they do make WiFi memory cards that will transfer the image to your laptop as you shoot. I'd look into that for an option.

What kind of camera body do you have that accepts USB thumb drives? I've never seen one. Or do you remove your CF card, transfer the images via laptop to a USB thumb drive and then use the TD in the printer?

This kind of got out of hand...
I see a mini usb to standard usb adapter on the market. I thought I could output from my 50D mini usb port to the adapter and hang a Thumb Drive on the USB side of the adapter. This allows a very quick USB to printer download and I keep on shooting with another TD. Just don't know about the CF card in the 50D. Will it also record the shot taken images?

Someone suggested multiple CF cards and load to a CF USB reader device.
Most probable suggestion I will take. CF cards are cheap and dependable.
Thanx everybody, for the helpful advice shared with me.

I see. That mini USB is for connecting a cable to computer or TV for uploading images, doing a slide show, or tethering the camera to a laptop computer. You could tether to a laptop and then print wirelessly from the laptop if you have a WiFi connection and a WiFi printer.

Or just use a wifi/memory card and send directly to the printer. You can get these now for less than $80.

Has anyone had any experience with the 4x6" Selphy 800 portable photo printer by Canon? It is a dye sub ink system and runs off of a dedicated internal battery?
Thanks for your help.

Very interesting question re- the mini USB port the answer is no it won't. You see there is no software written for that on the 50D that I'm aware of, when you shoot your pic’s they are written to the CF card, then you use a mini USB/USB2 cable to download to your computer.
