Here is the journey that a package took that I sent from Maryville, TN to Louisville, KY this week. Notice that it arrived at the Louisville Didtribution Center on Feb 28th. It left there and made a trip to the Indianapolis Distribution Center, only to make another trip back to the Louisville Distribution Center before being picked for delivery. Go figure.

I had a minor issue last year with a package I was expecting. I get a daily email that shows photos of letters and packages that are on the way. It is almost always on the money. However, with this particular package it didn’t show up and I waited a couple days before contacting my local post office. I was referred to a separate distribution center that is located only a few blocks from the post office. The center is generally not open to the public but a sympathetic lady greeted me and explained the process which is suspect. The way she explained it, when a package/parcel arrives at an interim location, its status is updated with the location it’s going to next, but if you look up the parcel’s current location, you will walk away thinking it’s already there. In the meantime, if the package is erroneously put in a bin designated for a different location and gets delivered to the wrong location, the receiving location will recognize it shouldn’t be where it is so they will log it to where it should be. But, if you checked where’s my package, it should show up as being already there. In other words, if I understand her correctly, there is no “in transit” status. If a package is going from Denver to Des Moines and has left Denver, if you check its status, the system will report that it’s in Des Moines. Now, quick disclaimer, I’m recalling the exchange as best I can and could be wrong in a couple minor details. The point is you cannot assume that current package status from the USPS is totally accurate because the status may be reporting where the package is going, not necessarily where it is. By the way, two days later, I got mine.

It's those $45/hour employees! They get it in the wrong line and it gets in the wrong truck! Then someone with some smarts has to figure out how to get it all corrected.

And it got there fairly quickly. You have to look at the big picture. Most mail to/from here passes through Albany, sixty miles away. The local POs aren't capable of handling large amounts of mail.

Someone in the USPS got the idea that the mail for our area to eliminate the distribution center here, Fayetteville, NC, in favor of sending it to Charlotte, NC for processing. So if I mail a birthday card to my neighbor it leaves Fayetteville and travels to Charlotte, which is 3 hours away, is processed and then shipped 3 hours back to the center that sorts it to the different post offices for delivery. It takes 3 to 5 days for my card to make this journey.

Along with all the other stupidity that goes on with USPS you can add in theft and laziness to the reasons I've gone as paperless as possible and am very happy when my packages are sent with other carriers.

No organization is perfect but there is way too many areas that the USPS needs improving.

I think it happens because every facility wants to get paid for every piece of mail. It's like socialism. The cost of that stamp must be equally divided amongst all.
