There is a thread about Spam, and where the name came from. Yesterday, I saw this.

I asked to question as to why spam emails are called spam. Not the spiced ham. I knew how they name it.

Why did you assume that the question in the cartoon was about emails?

Hormel once said it stood for Shoulder of Pork and Ham. Lately though they are running ads which call it Sizzle Pork And Mmmm.

Jerry said "There is a thread about Spam, and where the name came from." I believe he meant the thread started by me and in that thread I asked about spam emails not spiced ham as I know the spiced ham well and its history. I don't know much about monthy python. The cartoon talked about spiced ham which I didn't ask in the thread that Jerry mentioned.

That's why good concise communication is essential.
I didn't think back to your post about email, I just thought, okay, a prior post somewhere.....
And left that at that.

It isn't about emails, but the discussion about Spam here seemed to cover both meanings of the term - I think.

1993 First use of the term spam was for a post from USENET by Richard Depew to news. admin. policy, which was the result of a bug in a software program that caused 200 messages to go out to the news group. The term “spam” itself was thought to have come from the spam skit by Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Yes, it does seem to go back to that Spam sketch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLih-WQwBSc

Funny…

However, the long history, of references to the canned product in such a negative way are, I FEEL, a way of people looking down their nose at the poor who were glad to get SPAM as a meat in their diet.

OK, now I have said it… and it in no way reflects negatively on your post

I've decided for myself that SPAM means "Scientifically Produced Artificial Meat". That's my explanation and I'm sticking with it – until I don't!

I think the texture of SPAM/Treet/Luncheon Meat is horrible unless it's fried to a crisp! Fortunately, this gets a lot of the fat out of it.

Once a decade I try spam and come to the same conclusion. I forgot how bad it is. Salty, fatty meat product that has a smell like dog food. I'll probably forget this and try it again years down the road. The benefits of aging and a bad memory. 😋😋

Scientifically produced artificial meat is on the way to a supermarket near you. They're growing "meat" now.

In case you didn't know, all that delicious deli meat we've been enjoying for years is manufactured. How do you think they get that large lump of ham? They manufacture it.
