I’m going to Milan and surrounding areas in May…I’m just wondering what my fellow HH would bring to cover most events..I want to be light and effective.
I have:
Sony riii
Sony 16-35 f4
Sigma 24-70 2.8
Tamron 35 2.8
Sony 50 1.8

It depends on your shooting style/desires...

For me, I would take the 24-70 and the 50,
and I would probably mostly use the 24-70.

But you have to decide.

That would be my advice also, but also purchase a 1.4 extender to use with the 24-70. A lens of around 100 mm is very useful for portraits if you include native people in some of your shots. There are countries where some people dress in clothing that is part of their heritage like lederhosen in Germany. A lens in the 100 - 120 range will allow you to photograph people without getting too close. A 1.4 is easy and light enough that you won't have to worry about extra weight.

Thanks….that was my thinking! The Riii can do both full frame and crop so I’m really covered.

I agree with Architect1776 here, take the 16-35mm and 24-70mm. That covers the focal lengths of the 35mm and the 50mm. Dont worry so much about the maximum f-stops, your A7RIII has enough dynamic range and high ISO/low noise performance if needed.

If it was me ,and I have traveled and photographed around the world, I would also take something longer like a Tamron 70-180mm f2.8 in E-mount, which is very sharp, fast focusing ,not too heavy, not too big, and wont break the bank. Rent one or buy a good used one and take along. You will be thankful for having that longer focal length with you. Nothing substitutes for that extra reach when you need it, nothing.

If you dont want to take a longer focal length, use the APS-C mode (reducing from 42mp to 18mp) for 1.5X (gets you to 105mm with the 24-70mm lens) , and/or use Clear Image Zoom (jpeg only) and get an additional 2X magnification.

BTW I adore my Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN lens, superb image quality.

Cheers and have a great trip.

There are no TCs for the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 lens, none.

Cheers and best to you.

If you mean Milan, NY, a pocket camera would be sufficient.

When I travel, I prefer to go light with photo gear. If photography is the purpose of the trip, I'll bring everything. If the purpose of the trip is the trip, then I'll bring a compact.

Formerly I had mentioned adding a 1.4 teleconverter to give you a little more reach. Another responder gwilliams6 mentioned there wasn't one made to fit the Sigma 24-70 2.8. Looking at the lines I would have chosen, he is correct however Sony does make one that is compatible with their 24-70 2.8, and additional research would be needed to see if it would work with the Sigma lens. I wouldn't recommend it at any rate since the cost is over 500.00! For about the same price you could purchase a 24-240 Sony lens 24-240 from MPB in excellent condition. I had this lens mounted to a Sony a7ii and loved the combination. It was much lighter than a 2.8 lens and was sharp in all the shots I took with it. I hated to give up that combination but had to sell off some equipment in order to get into Nikon mirrorless (I had too much invested in Nikon glass to switch brands completely). So my new recommendation is to get the 24-240 and take that along with the Sony 16-35 f4. Those two lenses will give you a range of 16 to 240 and should cover any shots you may want to take. If you were staying strictly in the city, shorter lenses would be fine but you said you would be visiting surrounding areas and a telephoto with some length might be useful. Have a great trip and post some shots when you return.

Sorry, both Sony 1.4X and 2X TC DO NOT work on ANY 24-70mm f2.8 lens. They only work on Sony 70-200mm f2.8 GM I , Sony 70-200mm f2.8 GMII; Sony 100-400mm; Sony 200-600mm; Sony 400mm f2.8 GM; Sony 600mm f4 GM. And the Sony TCs do not work on other brand lenses. Please do better research, please.

BTW I own both Sony 1.4X and 2X TCs. Both these TCs extend inside the rear of mated lenses, so lenses have to be designed with enough space for the insertion and have compatible optical designs . Only certain Sony lenses are compatible.

Cheers and best to you.

I have been to Milan and agree that one of your lenses needs to be wide like the 16-35mm. The 24-70mm will likely be used the most.

I always take a fast prime too like a 20mm, 35mm or a 50mm. Which focal length depends on what you will be taking.

Two of my favorite shooting location in Milan were the Galleria and the Duomo.

Check out some of the images above and you might get a feel for what lens you need to capture what you want.
