Another one from Lehto's Law on YouTube.

A couple found a bat in their house, and they managed to get it outside. Their doctor recommended that they get a rabies shot, just to be safe. This must be done at an ER. They each got a shot and went home. Then they got the bill: $206,000. The hospital refused to discuss it, and their insurance eventually paid $53,000, while the couple themselves paid about $3,500. Typically, this shot costs $1,200 - $6,000, but there was also a mention of it costing $575.

I think I might have gotten some of the figure wrong, but that $206,000 is correct. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEk04y8nLAk

I have to assume from the post that the family (or someone in the family) was bitten by the bat that required rabies treatment otherwise there is no reason.

I learned 'the hard way' to ask, "What will this cost?" before I get medical treatment. Once upon a time, I had to get a scan for cancer and my numbers had to be below a specific range for the scan so I had to stop my meds until they dropped and be tested each week as they lowered. After four weeks, the doctor said, "I recommend that we give you three injections to lower those numbers rather than wait longer and I'll arrange it for you.

Three shots in the butt, wait a week, and get the scan. All went well....until I got the bill from the hospital that gave me the injections. $6,000 each for a total of $18,000..! The scan was covered by my medical insurance. The injections, well...that's another story.

No, they weren't bitten, but the doctor recommended shots. That sounds like overkill.

Pfizer has a net worth of over $240 billion. One reason for that is high prices. Another reason is making drugs that have a high price. Our whole medical profession is a scam.

My insurance company switched from CVS to Walmart. I called my doctor to get three Rx switched to Walmart with three-month mail delivery. I got a call from the local Walmart yesterday. My Rx is ready.

EDIT: The head of Pfizer received over $23,000,000 in 2021. That was a 15% increase over the previous year.

I googled up that info on the rabies shots a while back, and I'm a lot more careful around my raccoons and skunks than I use to be. A bat, from what I've read, can bite without you knowing and not leave a visible bite mark. You might not even awaken from your sleep. That's why the doctor suggested they get the shots.

I worked in a regulated industry where our prices for services had to be cost justified before a regulatory body. Then the Reagan deregulation fever started. If there ever was an industry/field of business that requires pricing oversight it is the medical field.

I had to get the shots some years ago. Have Blue Cross and paid all. Was done at a hospital and required several shots at the wound at the time and then several shots about a week apart.
Only pain was the first set of about 10 shots in aria.

I'm afraid that rabies will be with us forever, and the treatment is no fun. My wife went through that when she was a child.

Fortunately it isn’t the same ordeal that it used to be.

I think that if I hadn't got bit or scratched, I would have foregone the shot. I've escorted any number of bats out of the house. I like bats and everytime I don't get bit by mosquito, I thank a bat.

This all brings to mind the Pharma Bro guy ie; Martin Shkreli. He eventually ended up in prison. Guessing he was to small time of crook to get away with the same crimes that the big leaguers get away with for the commiting the same crimes on a much larger scale. Money talks.

I even broke down and bought a bat house to hopefully reduce the mosquito population in my area.
Unfortunately, no bats decided to check it out.
