I was trying to learn as much as I could about my Nikon D850, which I bought from the widow of a departed friend. I tried to connect via Bluetooth to Snapbridge on my iPhone, but the app kept showing a serial number different from that on the camera body. Upon closer inspection i found that a model/serial number plate had been pasted over the original plate. The pasted plate has a different serial number, and the original plate has the same as depicted in Snapbridge. First of all, I can't figure out whether this is a US or grey market camera, or why the change in the serial number. The camera only has 2262 shutter actuations and comes with several lenses and accessories. I'm confused! See the images:

Both of those serial numbers indicates it is NOT a US model. If it works fine, keep it. If you ever have problems, there are several places that will repair it such as Midwest Camera.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

It would seem to me the real mystery is, why would someone go to the trouble to obtain and then paste a false serial number on the camera when the camera already has a perfectly fine serial number. Where would someone come up with the pasted on fake serial number and why?

There is no reason the camera would not work just fine as it is one of Nikon's finest cameras.

I have never had much success with snap bridge with either the d500 or d850. Cascable works wele but the full version costs

Right. I've heard of problems with that, and I've never tried it. Maybe I'll try it after I solve all the other problems in my life. Maybe tomorrow - or fifty years from now.

You hide the serial number because it is stolen. Easy to make the stickers...probably all the same number each time too...they don't care...just enough to pass it off.

Well...YES, that is my point. There is no other reason to paste another serial number sticker over the original serial number. Sorry I wasn't clear on that but sure thought it was sticking out like a sore thumb.

Is there a way to look up the origin or history of a serial number?

Moving up from a D5500 to the D850 is like going from removing a splinter to brain surgery. A monster learning curve.

Why the panic? Why the crying over spilled milk? The OP bought a great camera and bunch of lenses, helping out his friend's widow and memorializing his friend. You have the camera and the lenses so go forth and shoot! Don't look back. The camera may never fail and if it does years from now you still have the lenses and can choose your next camera then. Really, no point in stressing here. Plan your next photo trip to take advantage of what you have! Even if you could know every detail of its provenance it wouldn't change the fact that you have a great setup. If it turns out to be foreign or whatever, are you going to go to the widow and demand your money back? Just move forward and shoot.

For some UHH members it would seem that even holding a gray market camera in hand leaves an indelible stain on one's character.

But there is a listing of stolen camera serial numbers:

Why yes, I completely agree with you. But I have to ask, why are you telling me this? Did I mention anything about the D850 compared to the D5500. I don't recall the D5500 even mentioned in the thread unless I missed part of it. Isn't the thread about the OP's D850 having a different serial number plate attached to the original serial number plate to hide THAT plate?

Could you please refresh my memory as to what I may have said that would give you some inkling that I was at all interested in the D5500 compared to the D850. As an ex cop I made note of the different serial numbers and pointed that out as in LEO use.

I will be right here for your reply. Thanks in advance.

It was a bit out of context. I am just a little overwhelmed by the complexity of the D850. I bought Darrell Young's book "Mastering the Nikon D850", and it's almost 700 pages! So, besides not knowing the provenance of my camera, I'll need a masters degree to manage it.

And AGAIN, why do you link my post with anything you have said. Are you aware that is exactly what you are doing? You are welcome to comment on whatever you want on the thread but do not bring up my name as if I commented on the D5500 compared to the D850. That has nothing to do with what the thread is about yet you bring up my name. In the future make comments relating to what I have posted rather than just bring up my name.

That's the reverse of my experience. Once I understood snap bridge has an odd connection to camera and I finally figured it out it works wonderful on my D500 and D7200
