I suspect due to a general disdain for the real SPAM.
From the Missouri State Fair where SPAM is a gourmet delicacy:
It's probably a reference to the Hormel "spiced ham" product of that name. In the world of electronic communication (email, phone messages, text messages, etc.) it refers to unwanted, unsolicited advertising, which can include scams, fishing (in its analogical sense), etc.
The term was probably helped in its migration from a meat product to a form of communication by a Monte Python sketch. Perhaps it is also furthered by the composition of Spam (the "meat" product) and its ubiquity.

If you have not tried 'Smoked Spam' then you are missing something good.

Many
many
years ago I was told that it was a shortened form of 'Shoulder Pork And Meat'
Haven't had it in years now, but I never thought it was something to be avoided. It's just that there were better choices.

Spam was a treat when I was a kid!!
And I still like it once in a while!!
The only problem is I can't eat a whole can at one sitting !! and I haven't seen the "Short cans" in the stores lately.
I have very fond memories regarding Spam. When I was 10 I had an evening paper route, except on Sunday when I had to get up at 4:30 AM to deliver the huge special Sunday addition to all my customers before 6AM. As motivation to get up and get going on cold winter mornings my Mother would promise the two of us would have a breakfast of Spam, eggs and Hot Chocolate together when I returned after completing my rounds.
Those were very special times for me, alone with my Mother, since I was one in a family of 10.
I could smell the Spam cooking on the stove as I returned home. I usually ran the last few blocks to get home as soon as possible. The aroma of Spam cooking in a large cast iron skillet was/is heaven to me.

I smoke my own spam on my offset smoker.
It gives a much bolder smoke flavor.

Oh I never ate the whole can in one meal but that doesn't bother me at all. Leave the rest in the fridge and fry it when I am ready to eat again.
I was always excited when my mother would put spam sandwiches in my school lunch. Digital spam would not get a bad reputation from my real spam experience.
Those of us raised in the south were fortunate enough to become familiar with other meat-based delicacies like head cheese or souse, as it was called around here. Souse, like Spam, was composed of the parts of the hog that that most folks would have discarded as unuseable. Souse, or head cheese, was made of the hog’s head - snouts, ears, etc., spiced up, cooked and compressed into a mold. The gelatinous mess was stored as an aspic. Nothing went to waste when it came to slaughtering the hogs in those days.
