I would really like to hear what your thoughts are regarding the Tamron 150-600 G2 lens vs the Nikon 150-500mm lens. I use a Nikon D850 for the camera. Will I get equal quality results with both lens, except the Nikon is only 500mm. I could add a converter to it if needed. Do most of you feel you get good results with converters or does the extra glass add to distortion?
I will use this primarily for wildlife, probably more birds than animals.

Thank you ahead of time for any of your thoughts as it is truly appreciated.

I use a 1.4 extender on my Pf 500mm 5.6, it drops to 8 when I do. It is a great combination on my D500 DX camera, and my D780. The 1.4 gives the Pf of a 750mm

I have both lenses with their 1.4 TC's and use them with the D500 and 850. While the Tam has a little more reach, the Nikon typically acquires focus a little quicker and is better in lower light. There is not a great deal of image degradation with either and I usually use manual focus with them, so I don't use TC's for moving wildlife...thousands of shots in Yellowstone. My preference is the Nikon 600 f4 with a 1.7, which I have rented for a couple trips, but it is cheaper to remain married and I will not purchase one.

I should add that it is extremely rare for me to use a TC.

I have owned two Tamron long zooms and got rid of them. I have the 200~500 Nikon and love it! I have a couple shorter Tamrons that I like, but will never own another long one! I don't use T/Cs but I do use the 200~500 with a D500 for more "reach" sometimes. It works very well.

I sold my Tamron, it never felt quite right. I've been happier with the the Nikon 200-500 I replaced it with on my D850. I haven't felt the need for more reach.

You will need very good light to work with a 1.4 TC on your camera. I have problems with aquiiring focus with the 200-500 lower light levels or lower contrast levels. In good light the 200 500 is a great lens.

Good Morning,

I relied on the 200-500 w/1.4 prior to purchasing the 500 PF 5.6. Whenever this type of question is raised the ‘I never user a TC’ pseudo-elitist false-purists emerge en masse. Reach is reach and there is no substitute. And the high-end fast prime telephotos are simply not realistic purchases for many, including myself. And one cannot always ‘take a few steps closer.’

The 150-600 G2 w/ 1.4 is a touch soft at 840; the 200-500 w/1.4 at 700 less so.

Ignore the anti-TC bias and enjoy either combo! (:
