My grandfather always said, "Kid, if you don't ride the waves of change, they'll wash over you. You don't wanna drown, do ya?"
He owned a dairy in Central Illinois back in the 1930s and '40s, into the '50s. At the point where he saw the industry signal a radical change from personal delivery to grocery store sales, he sold his business to a competitor who used the same home delivery business model. They got stuck with the useless fleet of milk trucks, and he retired happy.
I have a friend who runs a dairy with both a farmstand and a home delivery business. It's a limited niche, but he does well with it. Amazon has pumped up the home delivery demand in general (I don't think they sell milk other than through Whole Foods). Of course now even the grocery stores are starting to offer home delivery.
