Remarkable that you could focus this close with your birding lens. What did you use?

We were up at Formby (Lancs) - it is the only place I have seen them but have seen quite a few there over the years and love them.

I can't remember which make camera I was using at the time but my guess is it was on "auto" or "tv" as if out for a day relaxing and whatever wildlife appears suddenly those are my usual choices.

He's sooo cute! I have three or four grays that are getting a tad round because of all the dove food they eat off the ground. But you can't be mad at them. They are precious!

We in England beg to differ Amy........The grey squirrel has all but wiped out the cute red here. Grey is actually considered vermin and its down to the same kind of Idiot that introduced Cats to the british isles.........cats are so cute but they are responsible for the death of Millions of our songbirds every year !!!! So, while youre in your comfy chair and looking at the cat in front of the roaring open fire, just pick up your cute little cat............and throw him on !!!!

well, that is what they say. But then, just how do the experts know that it is cats that eat the birds? I'm thinking the cats are just an excuse not to put the blame where it could belong-climate changes, pesticides, insecticides, just to mention a few. My cat does get a bird or two. But he also gets loads of mice and moles. So they do have their place in the big plan. If we want to do something good, then have the cats neutered. That would cut the supply by many millions I would think. We made the problem yes, but throwing the cats in the fire won't solve it. And if you give it some thought, animals seem to act a lot like their masters, don't you think? How many species of animals/birds have we already done in by our raping of the environment in one way or the other? I will not throw my cat on any fire. Just so you know.

I certainly cant argue with a point well made Amy although one statistic thrown up by our RSPB is that 5 million birds per year suffer via the domestic cat......like you, i would like to know how they count them !!! There are way too many cats though , it seems like every household has one these days.

While cats are classed as vermin by law (in the UK) and until the law is changed there is really nothing anybody can say or do.

I personnally love all variety of animals/birds etc.

I have read that the Black Squirrel now in the UK is slowly overtaking the Grey - but as I said above love them all.
