Canon Pixma Pro-100, Print Studio Pro & Mac Ventura

Hi all: I'm wondering if anyone has had an issue with this combination. I recently replaced a 10 year old Mac Mini with a Mini M2. I really am please with the hardware, but not so much with the Canon Print Studio Pro (PSP) plug-in. When using PSP from LR Classic 2023 and PS 2023, I get the following error message. "An error occurred while printing. Memory may be insufficient for printing." My research seems to indicate the this refers to the printer memory. I have tried a number of solutions found on the Canon support site and other sources on the the web, e.g.:
installing the printer using the Canon CUPS driver (Ver 16.70.0.0), resetting the printer system (Mac), etc to no avail. I just got off the phone with Canon support who told me that PSP has not yet been updated to accommodate hardware & OS; support agent doesn't know when, or if, that will happen, PSP is not longer supported, blah, blah, blah. (IMHO that is just poor support.) He also indicated the PSP does not support newer printers. Just curious if anybody has had a similar issue with this combination of hardware & software, and if there is a way to get PSP to run. Thanks for reading this.

This happens. A friend of mine with a very expensive 40" HP printer was using an old mac devoted to printing because the drivers had not been updated and were incompatible with newer OS's. That old Mac Mini would be an ideal print server if you still have it. If not, then I suggest getting one. The Pro-100 is 10 years old; and that is getting on for computer gear. I recommend planning for this eventuality; when I replace my wife's Mac Mini, it will be used for that purpose. I currently run three Canon printers.

I had a similar experience with an HP printer when I replaced a dead 2012 Mac Mini (Intel) with a 2020 M1 Mini (Apple Silicon.) My 2012-vintage HP 8600 all in one would no longer scan directly from the printer control panel to a file on the new Mac as it had done to the old one. I bought a new, comparable HP all in one printer and found it wouldn't scan that way either (so I returned it.)

A call to Apple said it was a printer driver problem, not an OS problem.

A call to HP said their printers were expected to have a 5 year life and I was lucky my old one was still working goodbye.

Now, the only way to scan from the old HP printer to the new Mac is to use an HP program running on the Mac. But since the computer is some distance from the printer this is remarkably inconvenient when I have multiple individual pages to feed as part of a single scan job, as it requires moving back and forth between the printer and computer between each page to tell the printer to scan it into the same job. (The document feeder doesn't always work with the things I scan.) I now find it more convenient to scan from the printer control panel to a file on a Windows computer on the same network, copy the file from the Windows computer onto a thumb drive, then move the thumb drive over to the Mac and copy the file there.

This is the price of progress, I guess.

This is a common (generic) complaint here and elsewhere: My {name of old product} worked great with {old computer name/type} but I upgraded {product or computer} and it doesn't work.

In a realm where some gear lasts a lifetime, or close to it, it seems the expectation that other gear will do the same. Sadly, the computer and technology field is filled with obsolescence. Whether planned or not, old technologies give way to new, and often trying to retain backward compatibility either inhibits further enhancement, or makes the product big, bulky and difficult to manage.

Some day I'll take a photo of my "computer storage room," where I have old RS-232 cables, SVGA connectors, CD drives, floppy disk drives, and cables, cables, cables, etc. After 40 years in the field, I should probably realize I won't ever have a need for some of this junk. But hope springs eternal.

As the kids these days would say, "Things change. Get over it." In other words, seek new solutions.

This is a known problem. Since PSP only supports the discontinued Pro-100 and Pro-10 I am doubtful that Canon will update it. Perhaps Canon will update the successor software Print Professional & Layout to work with Pro-100.

As an alternative to PSP take a look at Qimage. While not a RIP it's the next best thing. I've been using it for well over 10 years and highly recommend.

Yes. Excellent software.

They have an alternate program that just does printer control (rather than the full processing that Qimage Ultimate can do). It is Qimage One by Binartem Software. https://www.binartem.com/

It is available for macOS and Windows.

Thanks to all who have replied - my post was not a rant about the joys of obsolescence - merely a request for information and I thank you for the Qimage suggestion; I'll give it a whirl. While the native printing interface in LR and PS works, PSP made the workflow a little easier. With regard to support by Canon, the agent was just a little to flip, IMHO. Canon released a firmware update for the 100 in October 2022, so someone is doing some support. Oh yes, they will happily still sell me ink for the machine, so, why not update PSP? Thanks again all for the Qimages usggestion.

That's the precise reason I have not upgraded to Ventura. I'm running Monterrey on a MacStudio. Even so, when I first got the MacStudio PSP, and some Topaz filters were no longer working. My workaround was to manually install the plug-ins to the proper location in PS and LR to get them to work. So far so good. One other strange observation. If I tell Lightroom to Edit in Photoshop, and Photoshop is not running, when Photoshop opens the PSP and Topaz plugins are not visible. If I close Photoshop, open by double clicking, then the appear in the proper menus. Crazy, huh? What I think I'm going to do is upgrade my wife's laptop since she doesn't print to the Pro 100 and see if they work then with manually installing the plugins.

Hi and thanks for the reply - I didn't have a choice of OS since this is a new machine. Your reply did jog some of my brain cells because I think I once had to install it manually because it was not in the correct location. I thought I had made some notes, but, I probably didn't. Do you have a link to instructions, or, would you be willing to tell me how to do it? I'm willing to try. Thanks so much.

Ok. For Photoshop all I did was copy the PSP folder in the Photoshop 2022 Plugins folder to the same folder in Photoshop 2023. Restarted Photoshop and it was there and working. For Lightroom, which I never print from anyway, You have to navigate to the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Modules/CNPSPPILR.Irdevplugin. I've include a jpg to show you my path. Yours may be different. Also, you need to find the folder with the CNPSPPILR.Irdevplugin to copy and paste it in. Remember, this worked on Monterrey. I'd be interested to see if it works on Ventura since I do want to upgrade. Let me know. Good luck.

Note that there is a newer version (2.2.5). Still just listed up to macOS 12.

Already there - doesn't work today either LOL - stay with Monterey - I'm going to give QImage One a rty and/or stick with the native interface and see if Canon does decide to support PSP/Pro-100 for Ventura. It's just wrong for me to think of shelling out over $500 for the Pro-200 when the 100 is perfectly functional!

SIMILAR PROBLEMS:
I just purchased the EPSON P700 to replace my EPSON 1430 which finally Died (best printer Ever).
I've used EPSON since the mid-90's and love them.

Running the current version of MAC/MONTEREY. Installed drivers, etc and all looked great until I tried printing from PHOTOSHOP. ICC PROFILES for the P700 are not listed, not visible in ColorSync, and the printer wants to print using the default settings and not PHOTOSHOP. WTF???

Long story short: I have contacted EPSON TECH 15 times. UNINSTALLED/REINSTALLED Epson drivers. Tried locating the ICC PROFILES within the Epson prefs..with no luck since they are now within the driver package..contacted ADOBE (who always blame the other software/hardware source).
FINALLY, did a screen share with EPSON tech for two hours...guess what?

They finally admitted that there is a 'bug' in the driver installer. Will it be updated? They don't know when, but they will let their software people 'know'.

Since I use RED RIVER PAPER for my art prints I went to their web site and they have all the ICC PROFILES available for download to be installed in COLORSYNC. Solved the problem by doing that, but EPSON/CANON/HP all need to step up their games.

I actually had to get rid of my EPSON 3880 large format printer since the driver software is out of date, will never be updated and is not recognized by the current OS versions. Sucks.
