G'morning kids

I'm just about ready to make the "Jump" to DSLRs and I have a question.
Will I be able to use my mid 80s NIKON 50mm and 80 - 105 lenses with my new d5100?
I am very comfortable with these lenses and I would really like to incorporate them in my bag
Thanks

Ol' Frank Loc: Orlando,

I think you can if you treat then like your old film camera. Everything will have to be manuel focus. I use a couple old film lens on my dslr with no problems.

Are they manual focus or auto focus?...If manual focus, you will have to shoot in the "Manual" setting only & you will have to use a light meter or the old "Sunny 16" rule plus the LCD/Histogram to determine exposure. If the older lenses are older auto focus lenses, then you will get metering, but no AF (of course). Shooting mode IIRC will be any mode except for those in which the camera would normally set the aperture (S & P modes & possibly some "scene" modes)...I use a lot of older lenses (both MF & older AF) on a Nikon D70s & a Nikon D300

The great thing about Nikon is that they maintain the same camera mount throughout the years. The lenses I had for my Nikkormat FT2 bought in 1975 would still work on the D5100.

Sure you can...you'll just be shooting in manual, like you used to do. I use a D5100 with "old" Nikkor lenses ranging from 18mm to 180mm with no problems. You'll just be pushing a button instead of turning a dial. I only have one "new" lens, and only use it once in a while.

Go to "Nikonian.org" then to "resources." They have a very complete chart as to which lenses will be compatible with newer cameras. As another poster has stated, Nikon has retained the same basic lens mount for several decades, simply adding new features as they appear. I have a lens bought in 1972 which can be used with my latest Nikon. Canon, on the other hand, has changed lens mounts more than once making many lens/camera combinations obsolete.

Us old film photographers just need to use the old habits we had before, using manual metering and manual focus. No big deal.

That Nikonians chart has errors that they have never corrected...Even Ken Rockwells chart is more accurate....I moderate a group on Flickr that deals with using older Nikon mount lenses on Nikon"s DSLR's & we have over 3,000 members who use lenses on their base Nikon DSLR's that the Nikonians chart says they can't...And their cameras haven't been damaged by doing so....

Nah if you're gonna go to digital you might as well splash out on a wide to mid telephoto lens to suit. Bite the bullet..
