What are some difficult truths about aging?
1, You can be anything you want to be. No, no you can’t. There are tests you won’t score high enough on that will preclude you from being accepted into whatever program you desire. All this despite having the intelligence and skill needed to excel at whatever the profession may be. Even if you have the right credentials and experience, if they are not hiring for what you want to do…well…you may be out of luck. There are miles of reasons why you can’t be whatever you want to be.

a. But guess what, you can be the best at the opportunities life presents to you.

2. Hard work is rewarded. No, not always. Sometimes the power of the universe conspires against hard working individuals and unfairly rewards our lazy, short cut seeking, less intelligent friends, co-workers, and acquaitances.

a. But if you knuckle down, don’t let the unfairness of the world ruin your attitude, show up everyday, and do your best, you definitely increase the odds of having a fulfilling life.

3. Money and wealth are your greatest asset. No, no they are not. They are important and provide security and freedom.

a. But your health is your greatest asset. If you have terminal cancer or some other horrifying condition, all the money in the world does not matter. In fact, if you get type 2 diabetes or heart disease, what you can do daily is radically impacted. So invest in your health daily.

4. That others care about your house, your clothes, your toys, and you in general. No, no they do not. We all think others are concerned with what we have or don’t have. They’re not. In fact the people we think are thinking about us, usually are not thinking about us at all. The world doesn’t really care about you at all.

a. But, if you are lucky, you have a few people who do truly care about you. It’s usually a very small number of people. They are the people that truly matter in your life and they probably could care less about all your toys.

5. That we will all live forever. No, no you won’t. Sure, no one ever comes out and blatantly tells you that you will live forever. But every message we get on TV, social media, or culture in general seems to want us to believe we are immortal. Worse yet, our own minds seem to lead us around as if we are going to see the next two centuries.
a. But, you are going to die. Everyone you know is going to die. That should not scare us. It should free us. Free us to be present in every moment because this moment is all we really have. The past is gone. The future is not guaranteed. We have today. Embrace it and allow it to grow the love you have inside you. Then share that love.

Yesterday is a canceled check
tomorrow is a promissory note
all we really have is the cash we spend today
Let us spend it wisely…

Such truth and honesty in that. The most important people in our lives will walk beside us in life and leave footprints in our minds after they depart their lives. We can only hpe that we do the same for a number of others.

#1 has never been true and yes there has been exceptions. Wealthy parents and connections make a difference along with education and contacts. Yes if you set your mind to something and devote the time and energy a lot is possible.
#2 Do what you love and that brings rewards and satisfaction. That takes courage and sometimes hard work to get there.

#3 Most often I have heard that those who don’t have it say it's not everything. It gets things done and makes life easier. Yes, health is very important right along with attitude. Genetics play a role yet doing the best with what you have makes a difference. There is nothing we can do about what others think about us so do what you can control and it's not other people or would you want to?
#4 Some do get caught up in material things and compete with others. It’s best to determine your own standard and meet up with that.

#5 Why in the past did we draft 18 years olds into the military because they don’t think they can die. The older most people become they understand their mortality because friends and family die. I’m not a religious or spiritual person yet I don’t believe this is the end of existence, you die, and that is it. I guess that you can say I have faith yet Einstein said that energy can’t be destroyed only changed. Quantum mechanics is just scratching the surface and it's more amazing than Sci-Fi. For me it's about quality of life and if I could have the body of a healthy thirty year old that would be fantastic. Being more than double that I understand how precious that was to be younger and at the time I thought of myself as old.

Of course, these are my thoughts and views, my current perception. The interesting part is some believe that what we experience, see, hear, feel and touch is real, while others believe it is an illusion or virtual reality. With AI and CG now with Microsoft software that matches a persons voice both views have merit.

"Money can't buy happiness." I would be glad to prove that statement. If someone will give me several hundred thousand dollars, I will keep careful records of just how miserable it makes me. 🤣
