OK - I should know how to do this but I can't figure it out. How the heck can I change the file name on my Canon R5 .... I go to Menu, wrench, file name ... but it only gives me 3 weird choices and no way to customize it.

Do tell, unless it is a secret hack or something.

See page 745 of the EOS R5 Advanced User Guide. The topic "File Naming" appears in the document's Table of Contents, pointing to the detailed instructions starting on page 745.

Thanks, Paul. Now you have a glimpse of just how lazy I am this morning. I have a "bunch" of Canons, 3 PS and an R5 that replaced both a 5d4 and 7d2. The PowerShots have a folder setting that automatically will create new folders, which as frivolous as that might seem is quite handy. I was surprised to see that the R5 doesn't include that capability.

And, you can see how I try to politely short-circuit an ask to waste more effort ....

Yup, I'm always leery if there's the possibility of a short-circuit, however, time not withstanding, of course.

For those who were wanting to know:
go to wrench, file name, change user setting 1, now just type in what you want - it will allow for 4 letters or numbers, then hit ok. Super easy - I was just having a "blonde" moment

And it only took you 10 minutes, including the time it took to post about it.

We now have proof that UHH provides inspiration.

I set mine to R5_1nnnn when I hit 10,000 shots so the 4-digit increment number wouldn't repeat. Added the "R5" prefix on the R5 body and "R7" prefix on the R7 body so I can instantly see which camera an image is from. Works nicely for me.

While you have a leading 4 characters, that only applies to jpeg images. For RAW images the first character is replaced with an underscore.

No. The leading underscore in the name indicates you picked a nonsensical AdobeRGB colorspace, something that does not apply to RAW, except for renaming the files.
