While I normally chase these guys off my bird feeders, this winter has been long and cold so far. So I just bought an extra 40# sack of seeds and leave him be. He seems to appreciate it as he has gotten pretty fat this year.

The worst part of squirrels is they will sooner or later destroy most feeders. After many years of feeding birds and a million failed methods of stopping the squirrel's from getting to the feeders I finally came up with an upside down, 13" mixing bowl loosely on the pole. The hole for the bowl must be fairly loose so attempts to push off it result in the bowl tilting a lot. I cut the rim off the bowl, figuring the rascals would grab onto that.

This works great, not one of the buggers have been able to get past it in about 3 years now, and believe me they tried. The only caveat is it has to be a minimum of 10 feet from anything they can jump from, including decks, trees and so on. I made mine from a old cheap stainless mixing bowl my wife had, but you can buy them from bird places although usually a lot bigger. The squirrels still come around, eating seeds off the ground, and peanuts if I put them out for them, but they don't eat all the seed and are under my control. Sputzies tend to feed the squirrels, tossing seed everywhere.

OK, embrace and feed the cute.
but
If the cute wears off I have a wild game cook book I found got at a book store clearance sale and can scan and e-mail recipes.

With the way food and esp. meat prices are climbing I suspect a lot of people will start thinking about taking up hunting, trapping and eating wild game. Gardening will also get a big boost - my wife is talking about me turning the backyard into a garden.

My bird wastes a lot of seed in her big cage, so when I clean, it all goes into a 44-ounce glass that I empty into a planter by the door - for this guy's cousins 🀎🌿🀎🌿🀎

Close enough to be a selfie! We share your philosophy, it's cold, let 'em eat!
