Nikon D850 firmware update

Today Nikon released a new firmware update to the D-850 after 6 years. It’s version 1.30, and it fixes the following issues:

Added [Portrait impression balance] to the photo and movie shooting menus. For more information, see Supplementary Firmware Update Manual. To view NEF (RAW) pictures taken using firmware version 1.30 or later on a computer, you will need to update NX Studio to version 1.3.1 or later and Picture Control Utility 2 to version 2.4.14 or later.
Fixed an issue that resulted in attempts to initiate [Lock mirror up for cleaning] in the [SETUP MENU] causing the camera to display the message “Disable [Network connection] in the Bluetooth menu” and lock the mirror in the down position, preventing it being raised for cleaning, when [Enable] was selected for either of the following [SETUP MENU] items:
[Bluetooth] > [Network connection]
[Airplane mode]

How many firmware updates have there been for the D850 since its release? And how many for the Z9 since its release??? Makes me wonder!

No cause for alarm. I've had my D850 for about 4 1/2 years. Seems like there have been about three firmware updates. One added the ability to use CFExpress memory cards. The latest added some functionality for portrait photography. Along the way, there was an update to include data for a couple of newly introduced lenses. Each update has also corrected a rarely occurring operational issue or two. About the same as updates for a large number of other complex modern cameras.

I don't think it has been 8 years. I seem to recall that they released one last year that enabled the CFE Express cards and some other QoL improvements.

The more, the better. As technology evolves I want my camera company to keep me up to date with the latest advances! This is a gift, not a hindrance!

Has anyone had difficulty getting the download to open? It keeps telling me to reboot the computer (Win 10) which doesn't do the trick.

This was released over a week ago. I'm surprised so many Nikon owners are just learning about it.

It was an easy download following the same directions as other firmware updates.

This is Nikon's link

This is the eigth update for the D850. Sometimes if you skip one it will be included in a newer version. Occaisionally you have to do them in sequence. The instructions on the Nikon site always shows what to do.

I think I just ran into that problem. A D500 I just purchased needed to be updated so it could read CFcards. I updated to the latest version and it still only reads a QXD card, not a CF. I will have to figure out how to reverse what I did and perform an older upgrade and then the newest.

Did you read all the instructions?

"You will need to perform the update twice. Performing the update for a second time completes the firmware update.
During the first update, the camera may or may not display the message, “Update failed. Contact a Nikon-authorized service representative.” Continue with the second update regardless.

Performing the Second Update
Complete Steps 5 through 7 of “Updating the Camera Firmware”.
A Note on the Second Update
Note that the firmware version may or may not change as a result of the first update. If the firmware version has changed, the “Current” and “New” versions displayed in the “Update?” dialog will be the same; otherwise, the two versions will be different.
In either case, the firmware version will be updated when you perform the update a second time."
