Just received Shutterfly's official notice that they are discontinuing their "Share Sites" service effective March 25, 2023. For more than fifteen years, I have used Shutterfly share sites to share groups of images (e.g. trips, weddings, kiddies' birthdays, local events, etc.) with interested folks. Question now is what does one do for a replacement? Dropbox is a possibility but I find it neither intuitive nor user friendly. Squarespace or SmugMug??? Others must be in the same predicament so I am kindly asking for advice. Many thanks in advance.

I have a SmugMug account and am very pleased with it. I've had it for years, and they've implemented a lot of new features that I haven't yet explored.

I use a One Drive free account. Up to 5Gb.
If you subscribe to Office 360, there is much more storage available (1Tb).
I upload the images and send a note to friends with a removal date.
I don't keep them there forever, don't do it on a regular basis, and don't store hundreds.

SmugMug and Flickr are now the same company, but the sites exist for different purposes. I think different prices too. Consider if 'free' Flickr fits your needs before deciding to pay for either of their options.

By using Smug Mug you can NOT turn off AUTO RENEWAL. = this means a lot for seniors.
By using Flicker you can turn OFF AUTO RENEWAL plus you get 1000- FREE photos before you have start to pay for the storage space.

I believe if you do not use them for a certain amount of time you will loose your stored photo's. I use them at least 2 to 3 times a year so my photo's will continue to be stored there.

My understanding is that all work currently on the shared sites could be destroyed when the site
is taken down. Does Shutterfly give you an option to move your work from their Shared Sites?

Hopefully the share sites are not the only place one has their work stored!

Yes, Shutterfly has afforded customers the opportunity to preserve their images in albums separate and apart from the share sites. In my case, all photos in my 43 share sites have come from Shutterfly Albums elsewhere in my Shutterfly account. Having difficulty trying to replicate what Shutterfly so generously provided by way of their share sites. Doesn't seem prudent for Shutterfly to do this because they will lose the print business from viewers of the share sites who ordered prints (or other Shutterfly products) from images on the share sites.

If you use Nikon, it offers a "share Space", I have the address easily at hand and do not have the tie to search it out. I'm sure you can find it from Nikon's web-site

I've started to use my google drive on a limited basis. I upload the photos that I want to share, get a link to that folder then send it out to whoever I want. As near as I can tell, the rest of the drive is inaccessible. If I'm wrong on this assumption, I'm sure somebody out there will let me know!

You are correct. The links created go only to a specific folder.

Any word on whether Shutterfly is going to enable a direct transfer of share site photos to another site? Many of mine have captions that I would like to transfer with the photos.

If you can use a virtual credit card, set the expiration date to end where you want it. That way there are no surprises on auto renewal.
