I just think it would be nice to have something that can slip in a pocket and could produce the images we see coming from phones, totally free of the phone. I don't pay a fee to use any of my cameras. That would change if the camera I'm imagining would have no connection except when I connect it to my computer.

I think I posed the same question a little while back .......

Anyone know a reason why camera manufacturers can't/don't make a camera with the features of a cell phone, without the phone. Would the still need cellular connectivity to do what they do?

Hmmm… like I use mine? Mini Computer, Sat/Star tracking, music, health, SOS Crash detection, word processor, dictionary, GPS, Maps, FaceTime, Zoom, Compass, tape measure, level, Scanner, calculator, language translator, Web Browser, Google news, Amazon orders, take Notes, weather, keep Contacts, calendar updates, Photo Editing, photo storage 100 gb, Watch tv/movies, Education, presently using 741 Applications on it… occasionally use it for photos and phone calls.
Don’t think you can squeeze much of that on a camera. Wait… the iPhone IS a camera, sort of! Huh…
Anyone know a reason why camera manufacturers can'... (show quote)

Wow! You make much better use of your phone than I do; just never took the time to access all it's able to do. BTW, noticed you're from Spencerport, I was at Hollink Motor yesterday, my son is a Jr. at SHS. We live near the canal.

Thanks for the reply and great link! If anyone wants to see a full range of I phone capabilities, this is it! A friend of mine is a wedding videographer. He fully acknowledges that an IPhone 14 Pro Max would meet his needs, but that he doesn’t dare show up at a wedding and pull out an IPhone! That would just not look professional!

Funny. I do the same thing with real estate photography. I have my Sony all set up on a tripod. But then I am also taking photos with my iPhone. Probably about 40% of the photos end up being from the IPhone. But if I am caught using the iPhone I just say I am checking lighting.

Why do older photographers refine their identity with camera brands and camera models? Shouldn't we just be looking for the shot and ignoring what we shoot it with?

Which counts most? "I shot this photo with *make and model camera*!" Or, "I shot this photo that I like!"

Mine is definitely smaller than yours!

I had a couple bags full of Nikon film gear in the 70's. My "big" M4/3 camera was chosen because I could get a long lens that fits in our camper.

My primary and favorite cameras all fit my pockets. I've never owned or wanted a DSLR. Even with a smaller lens, they won't fit in the "glove compartment".

My phone camera gets a lot of use but not usually when I'm on a "wall hanger" mission.

The last time the camera was updated was the 6th generation, 7 1/2 years ago. It looks like the same camera as the iPhone 6.

If you also have an iPad, please check out Affinity Photo 2. It’s only $11.99 for the iPad until Jan. 25th. No subscription. You own it. The capabilities wii blow your mind!

Thanks for all the replies.

coolhanduke - Would you still need to pay for a monthly plan?

There is a lot of work done with cell phones. Print size might be limited, but for display on digital picture frames they may be more than adaquite.

I'm not ready to give up my dslr or mirrorless cameras just yet ...but who knows?

You can always buy a phone without a cellular plan, and use it on WiFi for everything except phone service. You have to buy it outright.

I actually keep a couple of my old Smartphones around for Email and Camera 📷 use. The Cellphone Radio actually went out in some of them.

First, it would just add to the expense, size, and power draw of the camera. They would still need all of the processing power of the camera to operate the camera and process the data (including the performance required to do so).

Second, it would require integration of the camera with the phone. Given the number of smartphone users, one would think that the camera mfgs would have already added seamless integration to their cameras. It's mostly just software, right? But camera mfgs are outrageously bad at software innovation. Although this might also require some software updates to the phone software...the corresponding phone app that connects to the camera would need to be able to connect via WiFi while the phone is connected to cellular. Most phones can do this now (wi-fi hot spot connection) but might not allow access to the WiFi connection to software apps.

This last is what I want most. I want the camera to be able to be able to automatically push photos to the phone without my intervention, or be able to push photos I select from playback without delaying playback review or other use of the camera.

It has nothing to do with being old or being a photographer. Go to a woodworking site. Everyone discusses the wood they prefer to work with and the tools they use and their favorite finish. I was looking at one photo site where posted pictures included a template where you were expected to provide information on gear as well as the image.

These sites, to some extent, are communities. Nobody is obliged to participate.

We can pretty much agree that the Smartphone Manufacturers have already mastered the ART of Systems integration between the Cellphone Radio, Wi-Fi, memory, processor, display and of course the Camera!

Historically, I see rhe start of this somewhat like Kodak's early venture in to Digital Photography, when they used a Nikon Film Camera body on their 420 series Digital cameras. Kodak ALSO made Camera adapters for early Cellphones, so a partnership between a Smartphone Manufacturer & a Smartphone Manufacturer would possibly lead to an extremely attractive product!
