If you have to reinstall a program you will certainly need your installation keys.

I keep my installation keys on a spreadsheet with a paper printout in my file cabinet. If the house burns down, the spreadsheet file is with all the stuff that is backed up, both locally and to the cloud.

I have managed to get 3 apps. d/l

The primary cause of injury in old men is thinking they are young men.

Some programs are not so simple. Complex programs require supporting files to be placed at specified places through the computer and also require specific fields in the registry. If you're starting from a complete reload, something like Lightroom will not work just by placing the exe file in the right place.

Restoring the exe file is NOT the same as installing the program.

I have had successful installations from EXE files as well as recovery via Acronis backup of my Windows OS drive.

I’m not debating with you, just sharing successful experiences.

If an exe file gets corrupted but the disk as a whole is OK, replacing the exe file will probably work because the last installation placed all the required files on the disk and fields in the registry. But if you are rebuilding the system, you will need a full install of the program, not just placing it on the disk.

It sounds like Dell had you do a Windows Repair Reset which as you have discovered will keep all of your data files, provide you with a functioning Windows install, but will leave you without any of your apps. That is why it is important to backup your system drive (C:) using a backup program. Personally I use Aomei Backupper which has save my proverbial bacon more than a few times in the past. For future reference, there is also another less well known method of recovery that allows you to save not only your data but also your programs. The method is called the in-place upgrade where you essentially upgrade your Windows 11 system to Windows 11. I know this sounds daft but I have personally used this method in the past and it does work. Here is a link to instructions on how to do this procedure: https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-11-reinstall-without-deleting-apps/#how-to-reinstall-windows-11-without-deleting-apps.

Simply import them into LR, that's what I do

Also, download and run a copy of Belarc advisor and keep a copy of the results. Not only will it give you in depth system info, it will also provide a list of installed applications, and in most cases, the registration number - handy during a rebuild.

My laptop still has an (onboard), Disk.
I keep the [back up] disks in a safe place.

It was so much easier to shop around for disks at local stores, but since all the files,
now come as (downloads), I'm a bit frustrated with the companies that decided to
go that route.

I seldom download any new (updates) or attachments, for fear of inviting viruses that
have been attached to the new programs or updates.

I'm sure that the companies, have made a lot more money off of their new software
than when they had to package the disks and share the ($$) with the computer stores
that carried the disks in their shops.
Having the disks as a back up is great.

I think that the computer companies were aware that (many) share their disks with
other users, and they lost money, in the process.

It's always about the money, isn't it??

FYI: If a program (app) is a download, keep a copy of the EXE file. It functions the same as a disc. I store all mine in my downloads folder. Occasionally I need to reinstall a program. Easy with an EXE file.

While some program disk has no protection and you can install the program on many computers but some program that came with installation disk but you can only install on one computer because you have to activate your installation before it will run.
