Thank you for the thoughtful comment, Fred. You went straight to the concept of what I am playing with here: the relative importance of primary subject vs background and the fact that in the digital world the two really are separate entities. I have been working with some of my favorite bird photos to create portraits in the spirit of studio portraiture where the background can be controlled to support the primary subject and create a mood or visual effect that makes me happy and still honors the bird. I know it doesn't work for everyone and sometimes may not work for anyone, but it has kept me out of trouble for the past year or so.
