I caught a nice sequence today at Ridgefield NWR. Nothing beats a little luck and being at the right place at the right time.
Great Egret surveying the area

Something got his attention

"The Strike". I wonder what he is after.

A fat muskrat!

He shook it around several times, sometimes holding by the neck and sometimes near the tail. Each time some of the vegetation would fly away. Muskrat is still trying to hang on here.

He took it to the water and dunked it underwater several times. The vegetation is gone, and so it seems the muskrat is also. Don't know if it was the shaking, the neck pinch or the dunk in the water. Last photo taken because he flew off with it.

And just moments before the Egret, I captured my first photo of a male American Kestrel

A superb group of shots - and I love the kestrel one, with those awesome eyes πππππ
Your image of the American Kestrel is perfect. This bird and the Crested Caracara are two species on my bucket list.
Great shot of the Kestrel ! .......thanks for sharing
Good set. What were your settings on the egret
