Make an Invisible Folder

I saw this on Britec09 last night. I don't need an invisible folder, and if I did make one, I'm sure I'd lose it. If you want to make an invisible folder, here's how to do it.

On the Desktop -
Right click
New Folder
Alt-255 on keypad
Remove your finger from the Alt key and press Enter. (His video says to hold the Alt key while pressing Enter, but that doesn't work.)
Right click on folder
Select Properties
Customize, Change Icon
Select a blank space as the icon. As you scroll through the icons, you will see a blank space large enough for an icon. Click there.
Click Apply
Mouse over folder to find and access it

You'll probably have to play around with this to get it to work. As I predicted, after I made the invisible folder, I had trouble finding it. I deleted it.

But why would I want that, Jerry? The folders on my desk (shortcuts to the actual location) are there for quick opening.

Or - "Because you can." Finding it would be a problem, I would think. As for security, anyone moving the cursor across the screen would see it.

Not sure why anyone would want this; it sounds like a lot of work! I right-clicked on a folder, selected "Properties", and there was a box to make it "Hidden". Click it, then click "Apply". The folder and its icon will disappear. 😲 Click "Hidden" again and the folder will come back. (Which is why you hit "Apply" rather than "OK".)

I'm using Vista, so YMMV. FWIW, the hidden folder was quite visible to my CLIs (Command Line Interpreters) - CMD, COMMAND, 4DOS, NDOS.

I recall in the dim archives of my memory that in the early days of personal computers we used to be able to get into the operating system where the file names were produced and interpreted. It was possible to insert nonprinting characters into file names that made it difficult for someone who didn't know where those characters were to access the file. For example a file name might begin with three space characters. You couldn't just type in 3 spaces before writing the file name because they would just be parsed out. It took some special finesse to use those files.

If that is a problem, encrypt the files.
