I have a huge photo collection from Elementary School days to present. Many of the older pictures are, well, old and have faded and have been digitized. Others were 35mm slides that I bulk scanned, and saved as jpg.

I ask your recommendations for a software app that would bulk process the old pictures adding some color, clarity, contrast. An AI functionally would be ideal.

Take a look at the neural filters that Adobe has embedded in Photoshop. They are quite amazing.

That will only work if all your photo have the same lighting, exposure, contrast, and color balance. I doubt that is the case

I scanned my photos and slides as TIFF files, then am examining them one-by-one and producing JPEG files. If there is a shortcut, I’m unaware of it. This area is like modifying the originals - handcrafting works well.

Post a few examples of your old and faded images and I will provide a few suggestions.

There are a number of various software, automated and otherwise, that will restore some detail, punch up contrast and add/or some colorization.

In some cases, these applications will do surprisingly well and in rare instances, surpass the original quality. In many cases, it will somewhat elevate the enjoyment of badly faded originals- that depends on the extent of fadeing or damage.

Having done many photo-restoration jobs in the past, I can't imagine doig this on a mass-production, quick workflow basis, however, if you group images with similar degrees of fading or damage, you might be able to somewhat expedite production.

Years ago, restoration was accomplished through strategic copying in specialized films, production of work prints, and airbrush restoration of detail and damage repair. Nowadas can be done digitally but doing so manually requires experience and a high level of retouching skills. Some of the automated apps can do a decent job with limitations. If your goal is simply to preserve the images for sentimental or family history and to pass them down to future generations, you will not require exhibition quality- just better clarity and less difficulty in viewing. You may want to consider doing more extensive work on a few important or indicative images.
