School kids participate in this lower income area of NYC. It's a short parade. I chatted with and shot the spectators, then marched with and shot the participants, all in about an hour on this drizzly gray day. Flash was an absolute necessity. I have a couple of dozen decent shots, but the max here is 10.

For me, talking with and shooting the spectators is the enjoyable part when shooting at parades; they rarely refuse to be photographed and usually have strong opinions about something if I can take the time to find it.
Sophie, in the top photo, had a lot to say about the "sinful, disgusting behavior" she sees in Congress on TV. Eddy, in the next photo, does not trust the government at all when it issues health directives. Moses (call me Moishe) hopes his granddaughter will find a better life by getting a good education, but still come back to her roots to watch the parade when she can.
You might notice that the blue-clad drummers are the same drummers who lead the swimmers into the Atlantic ocean in my post about the polar bear club. And yes, that's a real camel, 1 of 3 at the tail end of the parade.

I really like your up-close and personal approach in these photos.....great work...and I dig it! Maybe you should post a "part II" to this session. Anyway, you did a great job of capturing and displaying some of the diversity of NYC.

This is Manhattan. Historically anything is available somewhere at any time. That's what makes it fun to live here.

Nice photos!! Interesting costumes. Love the camel!!

I do have a question about the sash the woman is wearing in photo #7. What is the museum of the neighborhood?

Thanks, Mike. When I first started about 15 years ago approaching strangers, I was most definitely out of my comfort level. Now it is completely second nature.
