Price Increases On Used Gear

It seems like, for several months, the used gear I'd checked seemed to have fairly stable prices. I've been eyeing a Nikkor 14-24G f/2.8, to replace my Nikkor 16-35 f/4. When I survey, I usually check out all the "usual suspects", including KEH and Used Photo Pro. Until just a couple of days ago, their prices on the 14-24 stayed at around $650-700, depending on condition. As of yesterday, the stock dried up, and prices everywhere (eBay included), have topped the $750 mark, if you can find one through a reputable source.

Has anyone else noticed this?

PS - I have located a 14-24 locally, for right @ $700, and I'll pick it up tomorrow.

I’ve noticed over the last 6 months that prices for DSLR cameras have been falling. I was selling a Canon 7D2 locally. Pristine condition and low shutter count with L bracket. I sold it for $700 with an older 50mm f1.8 and small SD card. This allowed the buyer to at least get started shooting. Based off a price drop of around $200 on MPB over the last 6 months I was a happy seller. I will be purchasing a Canon R7 eventually. I’m keeping my 5D4. Those have dropped around $400 in the last 6 months on MPB

Considering that the Canon 7D Mark II is an eight year-old discontinued design, I am surprised you were able to get that much for it. The used 50 mm f/1.8 added very little to the value. You must be very pleased with what you got for it. Seven hundred dollars is more than half of what it was selling for new in recent years. It was often available for as little as $1,300 before it was discontinued. When I purchased mine new in the spring of 2015, I believe I paid around $1,700 for it at B&H.

The prices of everything have gone up. It's called inflation.

The 7DII is still a state of the art DSLR just as much as the ancient D500 that is discontinued also.
And has far superior live view and video capabilities to the antiquated D850.
So it is a good choice for one wanting a DSLR that every EF and EF-S lens they get can be seamlessly migrated to the RF mount cameras if they ever want to do so. Unlike the F mount that is not all that compatible with the Z mount.

The lens you are referencing has historically been readily available...in oversupply, even. It has always been a good seller on the new market, but many lightly used ones quickly found their way into the used market, somewhat oversaturating it and leading to the somewhat depressed resale price level for it. Since its discontinuance (or at least big cutback in manufactured quantities, I suspect that the supply on the used market is shrinking. This is consistent with the difficulty you have had in locating one to purchase. The natural result would be a gradual increase in the price on the market. $700 is a very favorable price for an $1800 lens in nice shape. If supply shrinks, I'd expect the price to settle closer to $1,000-1,100 on the used market.

Sometimes used lens pricing is just quirky. The 16-80mm f/2.8-4 DX zoom (now discontinued) for a long time sold used at around $900...very close to the new price of a new one at $1100. The 24-120mm f/4 full frame lens could easily be found for $425-475 against the same price new of around $1100. And it is a better lens. But the 16-80 was always in a sellers' market while the 24-120 was always in a buyers' market.

Doesn’t that depend on which F-mount lens you are talking about - whether it has an in-lens focusing motor or depends on screw-drive driven by the body??

Price on used stuff are only what you are willing to pay for old/used stuff. Stop whining because it is given away.

I don’t see the relevance of your comment, which is supposedly responding to someone who has seen prices suddenly go up.

I had one for almost 8 years. While it is still a very good camera, th 7D Mark II is definitely no longer state-of-the-art, or even close, and hasn't been for at least a few years.

I'd suggest that "State-of-the-Art" is a pretty badly distorted, misused, and otherwise abused term in the photographic universe right now.

Sort of.
But that is the problem.
You need a score card to keep track of all the restrictions of the multiple versions, not just as simple as you state.
I believe since 1959 until the Z mount was introduced Nikon went through 9 different "Mounts". I say 9 mounts because Nikon fanboys kept saying Canon kept changing "Mounts" when they stuck with the same breech mount until the EF mount.

I agree that I got a good price for it. The key to selling it locally at that price was bundling it with a lens and sd card. That wouldn’t matter much here on the hog. The college student on a budget was happy to get a professional quality camera she could use for her photography class.

I'm making an observation, not a complaint. Whether I pay less, or more, I buy what I need, or want. Being into photography since the mid-60's, I've just about seen it all when it comes to photo gear. And I do understand the economics behind inflation; all three types.
