I have a lot of old information that's been backed up but it's gotten disorganized. I think a fresh 8 t drive will work and when I have time Transfer and reorganize

As longshadow said, how did it get disorganized. If you are using a backup program, it mirrors the files and directories you tell it to, then, any file that is added or changed is automatically backed up.

What program are you using for backup.

Happy with Backblaze. The initial backup takes a VERY long time. Mine took about three weeks, 24/7 to complete backing up a little bit shy of 2 TB. (I chose which which folders and drives to backup.) However, once complete, it runs behind the scenes not even noticed. Let's me relax a bit knowing should I have a horrible disaster and lose my pc and external backup, all is not lost.

Ah, perfect, thanks for the detail. Their website looked a bit like it does EVERYTHING but I want to be able to select which folders to backup. I expect the first backup will take quite a long time - I appreciate the timeframes everyone has posted so I know what to expect.

If you pay for Amazon I believe they still have free unlimited photo storage. I set it up, but for me its just easier to back up to my hard drives. Amazon had a 16TB external drive from $80.00 to $119.00 I just read the reviews,, dont get fooled , garbage not one good review.

One more question for you guys using Backblaze - my photos are on an external hard drive. Any problems using Backblaze with an external drive? Their website says they support external USB drives, but would like to hear if any of you have used one. Thanks!

That's kind of what I'm doing now. Here is my scenario: We are lucky enough to have a house in Roswell, GA and one in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. I have my photos stored on three external drives (one primary and two backups). I take the primary drive with me when I travel from one home to the other. Unfortunately, I have limited USB ports on my Mac in Santa Rosa Beach so I can't take one of the external backup drives to perform a backup while I'm there. Just don't have enough ports on that Mac. So......that's why I'm looking for a Cloud vendor. Because sooner or later, I'm afraid I will drop my primary drive and lose whatever I added at the beach house.

Buy a hub or splitter. Not sure what they are supposed to be called.

I do have a hub, but apparently not a “good enough” one. There are two USB-A and two USB-C ports and apparently the second one of each doesn’t have enough power to run my disk drive….? My backup drive won’t show up when I plug it in. And yes, I did test my primary drive in the port, also. The first port is fine, the second, not so much….I might take a look at a better hub / splitter / whatever that has more power.

They're called USB Port Expanders,
I believe by the majority of people.

I have been using Crashplan for maybe a decade. There are two things I like about it: (1) it does versioning (several other cloud providers will do this also); (2) it allows me to simultaneously back up to the cloud AND a local drive. That way I have a local backup of everything I have on the cloud. In a low-grade emergency I can restore from the local drive, which will be faster. If the local drive gets toasted I can back up from the cloud.

Crashplan is designed for businesses. There's a small business version (~$10/month/computer) and a version for larger business requiring more storage and computers. I started using it when I had a business. I retired but kept using it for personal files and archives. I suspect you don't really have to have a business as long as you're willing to pay the subscription (which isn't excessive in my opinion). If they want a business name, you can always make one up.

Some can be powered. My WD 8TB drive needs to be plugged in. I suspect that if it was a USB powered drive, I would need to have my hub/splitter/extender plugged in too. Mine came with a power supply like the one in the picture I posted above.

The powered expanders are better in case the single computer port cannot power 4 devices. CD drives and Hard drives require more power than memory fobs. That is, if the computer port can supply 4 amps, it won't be able to supply 4 devices at 1.5 amps.

Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Google, IBM, or ICloud if you’re on a Mac. Why? Because they are the biggest, and big means financially stable and more data center locations (which means better geographic redundancy)

There is no rhyme or reason on Amazon. No directory structure. For me, its useless except for folders I create for sharing.

For backup you want something that will duplicate your folder structure.

If you’re referring to Amazon S3 (and not some other Amazon service), it looks exactly like a blank disk. You can create any folders/subfolders you like, or if you prefer, you can copy your entire data folder and it will create the same subfolders so it will look exactly like your existing drive - no difference between it and starting with a blank external disk for backup.
