Yesterday was overcast with very light rain but it was my only chance to visit this location for a while (Egan's Creek on Amelia Island). The water birds here are comfortable with visitors and a longer lens is not necessary.
The image was taken from about 10 feet with a Nikon Z7 on an 85mm f.1.8 S lens. I cropped only the right and left part of the image to get a square image.
I was starting to get too close for the bird's comfort. He was just lowering his other foot to take off.

Thank you all for your comments.
The alternative to the 85mm lens would have been the 150-600 Tamron whose main advantage is some extra reach.
The disadvantage of the zoom is a lot of extra weight. That makes it difficult or impossible to hand-hold as I did for this shot.
Another disadvantage is that at 150mm its wide open aperture is only f/5. That would have produced about the same DOF as for this image but it's nice to have two additional stops available with the prime lens.
There's nothing wrong with the Tamron's performance on my Df and an image like this certainly doesn't need all of the extra resolution of the Z7.
