Wow, thanks Joe. I wouldn't have guessed that heavy metals were ingredients in chocolate. Fortunately, we don't eat much and now will avoid completely (almost anyway).

They're using California guidelines. Everything is considered unsafe by California. I just ignore anything from California. They have everything on the unsafe list.

The Consumer Reports study points out that they used California maximum allowable dose levels because there are no federal guidelines for safe dose levels of cadmium or lead for most foods. (FDA has limits for specific items like bottled water, candy and juice, but not overall guidelines.) The EU, on the other hand, lowered its limits for safe lead and cadmium levels in foods just last year.

For those interested, the original chocolate study can be found here:

Thanks. That’s VERY good to know. My family loves dark chocolate and frequently shop at Trader Joe’s.

I don't know how we survived before California choose to ignore common sense.

That's because "Common" Sense isn't available in CA. They feel that they're exclusive.

I’ve occasionally seen “Death By Chocolate” on a dessert menu, but I never knew they were serious

Hardly shocking. Everything is contaminated with everything, especially plastic. I've seen reports lately of studies of various foods, and plastic was discovered in everything they examined. Micro-plastic is so prevalent and so small that it gets into everything. If people didn't buy so much bottled water, that would help, but just a little bit. Commercially bottled water contains plastic. I doubt the water from my well contains very much, especially after it passes through filters.
