What I've never understood is why they're symmetric. I realize they grow from the center out but why should what's happening HERE be exactly the same as what's happening a fraction of a millimeter away?

It is very rare that I even get a remote chance of getting a shot of a snowflake. I have tried, once. But they sure didn't turn out good. Of course conditions in central Arkansas are a lot less than conducive to any snow photography. Frost, maybe, but snow only every few years lately.
Have you tried Google for snowflake photography? Some fantastic photos to be had 'out there'.
I'm not planning to try snowflake photos, my tolerance for cold isn't great these days. But I liked the idea of capturing the snowflake on a black sock which then served as a backdrop for taking photos. But I assume you still have to work fast to get the shot set up and enough shots taken to do focus stacking.
I could see using my macro lens to take pictures of hoar frost, we usually see it several times each winter.
