Zeke arrived about a year ago as a stray kitten, and I told my wife we needed to find him a home. Also, I told her that I did not want another pet and that I particularly disliked orange cats. I made a flyer complete with a picture to aid in finding a home. My wife rejected my flyer and said that she needed to be sure it was a good home, and that she would handle it. Apparently this is code for I'm keeping the cat.
It turns out that Zeke is a relentless hunter that has even had success with squirrels. To slow down the hunting, my wife makes him wear claw covers and a harness complete with a tracking device and a bell. Also, Zeke is now only allowed outside in the early morning before daylight. This has slowed him down, and I have been trying to change his name to "Crappy Cat" without success. Some of my other thoughts on the cat follow.
Zeke’s the Name
Freaky Zeek’s a crappy cat
He wears a vest but not a hat
He’s mostly bad and seldom good
He prowls the yard and neighborhood
Looking for, what he can kill
And, if it moves, he surely will
Creep, crawl and trap his prey
There is no chance they’ll get away
A squirrel, a bird, or butterfly
Have all been sighted in his eye
Though hunger does not drive the beast
Not looking for food or feast
Its just a game an exercise
To test his claws and steady eyes
Day or night is all the same
A crappy cat and Zeke’s the name
LOVE the cat! Sorry, I'm with your wife on this one! 🤣

Nice photos of that beautiful kitty!!
Many years ago there was a black cat dumped into our neighborhood. It had an injured paw and wouldn't let any one near. A neighbor was going to "put it out of it's misery" unless someone stepped in. I had been feeding him and trying to pet him so I told the neighbor I would take care of him when I could get my hands on him. The cat disappeared for a few days and I feared the neighbor had done what he said he would. One morning another neighbor called to say the cat was on her front porch eating her cat's food. I quickly ran over, snatched him up and got him into the bathroom at home. I had already talked to my vet about the situation and she said if I caught him to bring him in so off to the vet he went for X-rays, tests, neutering etc.
Hubby was a long distance truck driver and came home a few nights later to find that the black cat in the bathroom wasn't the one we owned. Hurrying out of bed to explain the situation I assured him that I would find the cat a home once all the medical issues were resolved. It didn't take hubby long to figure out that Shadow wasn't going any where. My vet dubbed Shadow and Sweetie (my other black cat) beach ball and butter ball because they were very well taken care of.
So you don't have to feel like you are the only husband to end up with another permanent resident. LOL!!
Hugs to your wife (and you) for rescuing that beautiful kitty. Please give Zeke hugs and kisses from me!!

Excellent photography, Dan! Of course, my crew is not impressed.
Hate the cat, love the photos! Although, I have to admit that I have rescued cats on a few occasions. One that promptly killed a baby rabbit that I was trying to rehabilitate! He didn't turn out to be my favorite rescue, by the way!

Nice pics!
Lovely poetic narrative!!
Wait, wait.....claw covers?.....you sure?.....or painted nails? 😊
When I was fairly young, probably started when I was too young to attend school, one of the cats was a very successful prolific hunter. When she'd have a new litter in somewhat warm weather, if she selected a kitten shelter spot that was within 25 or 30 yards of the house, I was regularly sent out to go remove the ripest of the pile of snakes, birds, rodents, frogs, etc, that she had in the pile of "groceries" she kept well-stocked there within easy reach for her babies. The aroma of her ripe pantry stock was not well-received by the adults at the house.

Having him neutered may reduce his desire to hunt,
Wonderful story, poem and portraits, Dan. Beautifully done. Especially love the color portrait.
