Thanks to all who responded. My wife and I take months planning a trip, using library books, web sites for towns, parks, museums, castles, houses, countries, areas in those countries, and those places we think about visiting. We use information from TripAdvisor, feed back from Airbnb customers, even those silly influencers. We use google maps to layout routes, make trip itinerary in word that we print. We usually have more things to see than we have time to see; some nice weather and some nasty weather. I find GPS coordinates for many places, take a Garmin with the location of the apartments. We take an evil MacBook with files.

With respect to the NW I was trying to confirm how large of area and how close together the sites are to each other. Using the huge amount of information given by fellow HHG I now need to figure out if we can put together a trip that meets our style. We will know where and if we are going in the spring by February. Until I started this tread on are there roaring waterfilled gorges in the USA, we had not considered the NW but now it is under consideration, but as Stan said we have been collecting information for other places.

The North Cascades Highway which crosses the Cascade through the North Cascades National Park should be part of your itinerary I think. There are some water falls and lakes in that area. The Olympic Mountains also.

That's one I didn't think of. The North Cascades highway would be perfect for what the OP asked. That would be easy to include a stop in Leavenworth from that route. I have lived here in Washington for 30+ years and have hunted in some of the most beautiful country in the world here and I've been in every state except Alaska and a multitude of other countries.

My previous post on waterfalls convinced me that going to the northwest may be a good idea. We are 73 years old and still can hike 5 to 8 miles a day and handle steep, rocky trails; don't like gravel. At what airport should I start and end the trip. Is there 5 weeks of sites. When to visit we preferer off season to save money.
I need to get flights, determine car rental and scope out Airbnb and get use to paying too much for lodging.

Best trip the family ever took was two weeks out west. After spending a week going through the Rocky Mountain Park, friends we were visiting there drove us to Denver where we rented a mini-van and drove north to see Mt. Rushmore and Custer national park (the Black Hills is near there also). We then headed west to Devil's Tower (made famous by Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and on west toward Yellowstone. Along the way, we visited The Remington Firearms Museum and the Irma Hotel and Bar Buffalo Bill named after his daughter. We spent three days in Yellowstone and headed south to pick up The Grand Tetons (the nicest mountain chain I've ever seen). We then headed back to Denver but stopped in Utah to see the Dinosaur National Monument. The family had already booked plane fares and hotels to reprise the trip when Covid hit. Everything was canceled and I ended up losing about 285.00 on airfare (it had to be used by this last September and wasn't). After spending two weeks with the family, I had planned to meet up with a couple of friends who would be flying into Salt Lake City and spend another week out west. If I go back anytime soon, I want to hit Salt Lake and head south toward the Four Corners area. Out west is a great place to visit so best of luck on your journey. Post shots along the way.

The west that we have seen is fantastic. We have never gotten west of the continent divide; but since about 1980 to 1999 we have camped or and later Airbnb numerous times at these places Moab, the four corners area, Yellowstone, Tetons, Mesa Verdie, Durango, north and south Bad lands, mount Rushmore, Horseshoe bend, Antelope canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Petrified forest, Corn Palace, Salt Lake city and the salt flats, dinosaur tracks picketwire in Colorado where I got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere, and on the same trip another flat tire coming down a mountain out of a snowstorm in May, Rocky mountain national park in a snow storm, frozen water in the camper in Yellowstone, broken frame on the popup twice and other places between there and Northeast Indiana. I will admit that we pulled popup to many of those places and the 3 week round trips were easily 3000 or more miles. Lots of fun times and great things to see and do.
