Thanks.

I believe that it was Gordon Lightfoot that paid the ship a fitting musical tribute.

Sad day for many. It's hard to understand how such a large ship can be tossed about until it breaks up.

The Great Lakes are not the best place for a pleasure cruise, especially after November. Thousands of ships and many thousands of sailors have been lost there.

There's a lot on YouTube about that.

The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald is my favorite song by Gordon Lightfoot.
When listening to the lyrics I can visualize the terrible ordeal the crew went through on that fateful day.

I moved to Michigan in 1982, several years after the sinking of Edmund Fitzgerald. Prior to that, the only Great Lakes I'd seen were Ontario and Erie, and on good weather days. A friend of mine owned a Chris-Kraft 30+ footer. We set off from Gross Ile and went up to Lake Huron and points north. A squall blew up on the third day, and I thought we were going to founder. I'd been to sea on destroyers, but nothing compared to storms on the Great Lakes. I've taken Cape Hatteras in a storm, with waves breaking over the forward 5" gun mount, but it was a piece of cake compared to the waves on Lake Huron.

I did some further reading, and one of the things that makes the Great Lakes unique, is the relatively short wave lengths of the waters.

Last night the local PBS did a special on Edmund Fitzgerald. They interviewed a lot of folks involved in the original search and rescue, among them the captain of Arthur Andersen. The search and rescue effort was huge, but Edmund Fitzgerald must have broken in half so fast, there was no hope of anyone surviving.
