Dragonflies From a Recent Texas Trip

The dragonfly flight season has pretty much come to an end here in PA. So, on our trip to Texas to see the G-son play football, I met up with some of my dragon hunting buddies. Here is one species I photographed. It is a Roseate Skimmer (Orthemis ferruginea). You can see the color change from the immature to mature male. Part of the color change is caused by a waxy build up as it matures (pruniosity). The female pretty much stays the color you see. The "flanges" on the sides near the end of her abdomen (S-8) help to scoop water as she flings her eggs on to a wet pond bank.

Another nice set. I appreciate the information provided. I tried a 20mm extension with my 70-300 Nikkor with mixed results.

Thanks Jack. I’m glad you the set. I tried many different set ups until I landed on what I have now. 3-5 hours in the field pushed me to go light in weight without jeopardizing photo quality.

Thanks, Doc. It's been a very long time since I've used extension tubes. I'm going to have to give that a try! I'll let you know how it goes! Or maybe show you how it goes. It's Dragon season pretty much all year round down here in Florida.

Beautiful, Doc. We have a few still around but I haven't hunted them down recently. I think I will, though.

I tried different combinations of lengths until I found what worked well for me. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
