Hello everyone,
We have a bucket list to check off - Norway Fiords in July 2023.
While this will be mainly sightseeing, yes I will be taking loads of pics.
I am a habit photographer with a Sony a6000 and a Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII
As you can see minimal at best but did take some really good pictures.
I already have a Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens and 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS Lens
Question is: should I purchase any of the below from, yes, BH Camera!
1. Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens
2. Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS Lens
On a personal level, I think the 18 - 135 should be enough with serious cropping after the fact but checking with the experts/professionals.
Thank you and happy photography!!

Hello everyone, br We have a bucket list to check... (show quote)

It's a matter of personal preference for what you may want.
My kit lenses (in 2010) were 18-55 and 55-250.
I have a Sigma 18-200 (in 2012) that lives on the camera now. It just saves me from switching lenses a lot as I like composing in the camera.
Yea, I lost 50 on the high end. Oh well...

I was over in Norway in 2019 and took my RX10m4 and A6300 with the 16-50 and 18-135 lens. This pair of cameras has the advantage that they used the same battery, so I could reduce the number of batteries and chargers from my gear.

I don't think you need to buy a new lens.

KenCan,
we were in Norway in May this year on board P and O Iona for 7 days sailing from Southampton UK. Visited Pulpit Rock, Lang Fossen waterfall and medieval village. I used a Nikon DSLR with 24-70 F2.8 zoom for 95% of shots and 70-200 F2.8 for remainder. Even used a tripod on board for a cascade of water to the swimming pool. 2 days of rain and I mean real downpours, carry a rain cover for your camera and keep shooting. I will add 2 pictures below.

Lang Fossen waterfall, to scale the height look at the lower right side with the dual carriage way road, this waterfall is 610m high and this was shot from a moving boat in a rainstorm. The RAW image looked black and white but in post-production this is what you see. I was on the left side of the boat sailing towards the waterfall and took loads of images whereas the people on the right side could not see the waterfall! If you are going with wife or partner etc maybe separate and one sit on one side when you see who has the better prospect of an image move the photographer to get the best chance of getting an image.

KenCan, taken at the base of Lang Fossen waterfall having crossed the previously mentioned dual carriageway road - Nikon DSLR at 24mm on a 24-70 zoom on a tripod. Unfortunately, this was sightseeing holiday not a photographic holiday and time constraint no time to use a ND filter, set up tripod, compose and shoot.
Goretex rain gear and boots.

I travel lite, I travel right. I take two camera's on vacation. The Sony HX99 with a fixed Zeiss zoom of 24-720 mm and a shoots raw. Any my Sony a9 with a Sony 24-105 f4 with a B&W polarizer filter.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I did that trip a couple of years back, and unless you need to shoot critters, you’re 135mm zoom backed up by the rx100’s 200mm length will probably be sufficient. I took my Sony 6400 with the exceptional Zeiss 16-70/4(24-105 equivalent), the wider Sony 10-18 and my Sony 18-200 do it all and the RX100/7. I don’t think I ever mounted the longer zoom. BUT - since I planned a 1 day excursion on tiny boat in North Atlantic to see puffins, I also grabbed my Nikon D500 and my Nikon 80-400 which I used exclusively that day.

Generally speaking, the trip you’re taking is probably more siteseeing oriented and for my style, I wouldn’t spend the extra money. In fact, if you have a need to spend for the trip, upgrading from your lenses to that incredible Zeiss 18-70/4 (with it’s equally incredible price) would probably yield better results than buying mediocre long zooms.

Btw - hope your ship goes into Gerainger - that was the highlight fjord on the trip, both in and out.

On your drop sensor camera the 55-210 will take you long enough with its 315 equivalent. If you add a lens you might get a wider one, albeit your RX100vii gets you down to 24mm but with a smaller sensor.

Rick from NY mentioned Geiranger. I was there in 2018 on Cunard’s Victoria and took this photo with my iPhone 8+ at the time.
The fjords are magnificent and you almost can’t go wrong with any camera you have.
Have fun!

I was there in July 2022. I took a canon R5 with the RF24-105 F4 and a EF100-400 lens with adaptor. I rarely used the 100-400 maybe 20 shots out of almost 1500. The lens you have should be fine. Enjoy it's a great country.

OK - I'm not sure what that is.

Just thought I'd add a few of the shots I took using the Nikon D500 and 80-400 at effective 600mm. It was a cold, rainy, dreary day and I shot at ISO 2000, f8 at 1/2000sec. Other than this day shooting distant critters, I used the Zeiss 18-70 (24-105 eqiv), for what it's worth.

I'm not in the majority here, but I also favor having a longer lens available. I have an 18-300 zoom on an APS-C body (~29-480, 35 equiv), and sometimes I would have liked something longer. Then again, I don't travel to fjords.
