Hi: After reading the remarks here I have come to realize that I am in no way ready to compete with the photography geeks on this site, Is there a site with contest for persons who aren't as smart as you guys? You all sound like professional photographers.

Ah... come on! You're just as good as, if not probably better than 99% of the rest of us. It's not the cost of the camera, nor the years of experience looking through a view-finder, it's the heart and soul of what you see in your mind's eye. Yeah, sure, we critique each other's photos, and that's how we learn things. You'll love it, just jump right in.

we are not. there are actually very few professionals on this site. what we are is a bunch of rabid amatuer photographers with such a love for the art that we are willing to learn from books dvds and most importantly by posting our photos and learning from the critiques. we won't bite, in fact there are several here who will go out of there way to comment on the positives as well as areas to improve., there are asuprising number of photographers on this site who have been shooting for less than a year and have produced some amazing work. it is also a JOY FOR SOME OF THE MORE EXPIERENCED PHOTOGRAPHERS TO SEE POTENTIAL IN SOMEONES WORK HELP TO SOFTEN THE ROUGH EDGES AND WATCH THEM TAKE OFF AND HOEW HAPPY IT MAKES THE NEWBIE. pOST SOME OF YOUR WORK PLEASE. oNE THING i HAVE NOTICED WITH NEW PEOPLE IS THAT MANY TIMES THEIR WORK IS BETTER THAN THEY GIVE THEMSEELVES CREDIT FOR.

CapsLock... Gotta keep an eye on that CapsLock key, sinatraman. I had one explode off the keyboard once and nick one of my gold-capped front teeth. Painful experience, costly too.

yes I know. im not a good typist (theres a shocker) and didn't want to retype more than a sentence, however it did emphasisize a point that people sometimes do not realize that their photos show more potential and talent then they think.

Don't worry. Get in and submit your work.
I can tell you that although I've been in photography as a hobby for over 30 years and have been published a few times, I do not claim to be a pro. And I don't recall reading of too many on here that claim that either.
We're comfortable, but most of us are still hoping to learn some new technique. Digital changed it up for many of us who've been in it for a long time, so we had to learn a few things, and our options of opened up in the post-processing arena versus what we could do in the old darkroom.
And I, myself, really don't have the time to pursue competition, and I bet a few others aren't going to be able to either, so don't just assume that your work is going to be any less than anyone else's who compete.
Compete, read, learn, enjoy.

You're an excellent photographer, sinatraman. I've seen some of your posts. You have a good eye. Just joking with you about the CapsLock key thing.

I belong to many photographic forums. The best photographers and photographs are on http://www.shutterfreaks.com. My single BOTW(Best Picture Of The Week) win was worth more than any Trophy to me. Now they are top notch photographers but NOT camera snobs. No egos there, just beautiful photos.

If you don't have a chance on this forum work toward getting better. But, in the meantime post what you think is your best shot. To participate is to have a chance. You get a blue ribbon from me for trying. :)

Oh, by the way, one of the founders of ShutterFreaks is Hugh Stockton, a great photographer whose camera of choice is the entry level D40 Nikon, 6MP. You should see his work.

Agree 100% with Bob, which happens about 99.9% of the time. also if you are not sure about your photography skills, can i gentley suggesst a trip to your loval library to locate a few intro to photography books?. whateverone you start to find usefull, go to a book store and BUY it. You will want to highlight and make notes all over it, and library's tend to get hacked off if you return books in that condition. Besides what very rarely gets said on here is that among usefull tools for photographers is a personnel liabrary of books on photography and also books of photography. I still refer ocasionaly to the photographers handbook. between photography and photo editing books, i have over 50 in my library and still growing.

oh gizzy whicker (please explain your screen name, im sure there is a story) thanks fot the compliment. I am regretfull for the overcapitalization, but mt brain is faster than my hands.

Yes please post some of your work, we rarely give ourselves enough credit and sometimes a friendly "way to go" is what you need to hear.

I started learning about my camera just over a year ago, I'm far from being a professional anything, let alone photographer but I love it and enjoy talking about it and looking at everyone else's photos.

GULP! Well, sinatraman, I was wondering when someone would get quizzical about the gizzy.whicker. Actually, it's not as bad as it may at first appear to be. One fellow got a bit frustrated with me on one of the strings a few days ago and referred to me as the Gizzard Whacker. Draw your own conclusions on that one. Actually, some years ago I was publishing weekly newspaper columns during which time one particular story ended up being a 20 week series about a man called Grizwald Whitaker, nicknamed the Gizzywhicker. The story was wildly popular and I myself personally got stuck with nick name. Well, so, I just kept it. I'm beginning the posting some local "Americana" video clips I've filmed on Youtube (I'm president of our local Historical Society -- go figure) which can be accessed by doing a Youtube search for "TheGizzywhicker". One video of UHH interest is a film on Tin-Type photogrphy.

Here's where you may want to start if you want to get your feet wet in the contest arena.

Well... bobmielke, I too have a Nikon D40, 6MP like Hugh Stockton's. So... I'm just wondering... there must be something besides the camera and lens that goes into a photograph being so-so, good, better, or great. Don't you reckon?
