Sony a7Riii RAW shots open now as JPEG in PSE 2018

A friend of mine asked me this question to see if I could help him. A quick web search did not find anything. I am copying his message below.

I am doing something wrong with my camera, something probably simple, but I cannot seem to get the photoshop to get the photo to appear as shown to adjust basic parameters before making changes. The camera is set on fine raw, compressed on menus and shows when I take the picture as raw, but when I open in photoshop 18, it shows as JPG! What is happening? It doesn’t make sense, any ideas?
In short, I can’t get the photo to open like the photo above. (Photo not attached)

He is using a Windows based HP Laptop with PSE 2018. He has previously been able to open and edit his RAW shots in PSE 2018 and for what ever reason he is now only able to open them as JPEG's. I do not know or shoot Sony Cameras, and I do not know PSE 2018. Any help is appreciated. Gary

I am not an expert so maybe this answer is not what your looking for. Like you I do not use a Sony, so the first thing I would do is contact Adobe. I had to upgrade my PC in order to run PS after Adobe upgraded to a new version about a 1 1/2 years ago. Difference is PS just would not open. In your friends case, if Adobe cannot fix the problem then he should contact Sony or check with a Sony dealer. Good Luck.

Not sure what camera your friend is using but, On my Nikon jpeg offers a fine/quqality choice for image files. Raw offers full raw, compressed lossless & compressed which throws some image file data away. Have your friend look in the camera manual under image files/quality/type. To me it sounds like your friends camera is recording jpegs.
Hope this helps, Tom

As mentioned above, the software does not magically convert the file format. That is done when the file is Save-As or Export inside the digital edit software. Either your friend is offloading only the JPEGs from a RAW+JPEG configuration, or is shooting JPEG rather than RAW.

Have them review the card contents using the computer OS (file manager / explorer), and determine what types of files are on the card. Update the camera settings, if needed. Or, update the file selection to be copied onto the computer.

All that said, a newish camera like the A7RIII, can an expired software like PSE2018 open these files? That might be the issue, that camera's RAW files are not supported by this expired software, so only the JPEG of a RAW+JPEG configuration be used by the software. This can be confirmed by reviewing the RAW files / cameras supported by PSE2018.

Adobe says support for the A7RIII was supported in ACR v10, and PSE2018 could be updated to ACR v11. So it does seem the PSE18 can handle the ARW (Raw) files from this camera, assuming this update has been installed by your friend.
