And if one always checks, sometimes the per ounce/gram/piece price is higher in the larger package!!! Similar to some discounted prices - with the discount being applied to a higher "original price".

I remember the old days (last century), when retailers gave real quantity discounts to encourage shoppers. The point of sale system applied the discount to the last item. (For example, “3 for $1” meant .38 each with the third one at .24.). That discounting seems to have disappeared, replaced by pointless quantity pricing, like “4 for $1, .25 each”.

Apparently, somebody needs more than a minute, Linda... sign still up today... I figure anyone buying grapefruit in even numbers and paying 50% more for the pleasure... well, they're probably used to it.

Hmmm.... I rather like grapefruit... good with vodka, gin or bourbon... maybe rum, too. And, while thinking about it, ever watched a competent chef, in about ten seconds, hack off the fore and aft ends of a grapefruit then, in one smooth and continuous motion separate center from skin, followed by a wrist twisting knife action where the individual segments plop out whole, membrane-less, neat and deelish? Really cool...
