Those with recent Macs (see article linked later) can install an update to OS 12, or upgrade to MacOS 13.

My recommendation is to wait until version 13.2 or 13.3 to avoid bugs and incompatibility issues. Let the usual hasty early adopters take the arrows in the back...

One of Apple’s best, and also most frustrating attributes, is that they evolve. The Mac you bought is very different five years later, due to system and applications software updates and upgrades.

What I miss most since moving to Mac, is the “directory” app. You know what I mean? The “tree” that showed every program and it’s offspring, and their path.
Unless, of course, it’s still there, but I just can’t find it?

Curious because I'm thinking of moving to a mac. I hate all the updates. One for the internet & one for photography & such,= totally disconected. = If it ain't broke ,,,

It’s there in a way… Experiment with Finder to see which view you like. There’s at least one view that does essentially the same thing.

There’s something to be said for that approach…but the contrary one also has advantages. Apple software quality isn’t as high as it used to be…but OTOH it’s still pretty high. If one has no esoteric apps or drivers that need to be verified updated or compatible…and if one has a system that isn’t having software issues…and if one has an adequate backup…then upgrading is just fine. I did my 14” MPB today…and it’s just fine.

Ther are always bugs in software…always…but Apple does a pretty good job at releasing macOS (and their other OSes which are all based on the same code as you know already) that works for the vast majority of people.

I did wait until today just in case there was a great hue and cry after yesterday’s release…and I will wait on doing my Studio until zi get verification that a SoftRAID update from OWC is t needed…but my qMBp is fine and I will do m6 wife’s M1 Air probably Friday…but I meet all of those criteria I mentioned above…plus I like being on the bleedin* edge of course.

It’s called Finder and it’s the desktop thing you see. Choose view by list and you can get the hierarchy easily…or if you prefer a view that looks like Windows XP or similar versions…there is Commander One, Pathfinder and several other utilities that will give you that.

Those of us who know the ropes don't have much risk. We know how to upgrade safely. It's the folks who don't understand the details — and use Macs for that reason — that I'm addressing with my advice to wait. I plan to create a new startup drive for 13.0 this weekend.

I always worry about peripherals such as scanners, printers, and obscure hardware with drivers that might already be a bit shaky under the current OS. I've lost many a device to Mac OS upgrades over the years.
