Did anyone other than Pentax use that formula?

Yes, one of my Industars includes lanthanum.

Nikon D850, D610, D500. No mirrorless. I will take a gander around fotodioxpro. Thanks!

Due to their long registration, Nikon DSLRs are generally poor choices for adapting other mounts to, but they should be OK with medium format SLR lenses.
Of course old Nikon lenses will fit the bayonet mount too but I believe there are a few types that can cause issues - check with Nikon experts. (The only Nikon body I've used myself is a point & shoot - which does adapt lenses well!).

Coming back to the original question:

I’m asking out of curiosity, not a desire to actually use vintage lenses. From what I’ve read it is possible to shoot in aperture priority with a vintage lens. My question is how would the camera know to change the shutter speed given that there is no communication with the lens when you change your aperture?

This morning I went out with my Pentax K-30 and a Takumar M42-mount {probably built 1960-1975} 50 mm lens, and took the below picture; I did have to darken the picture slightly in PP, but my adjustments were no 'worse' than they would have been with any other lens. Takumars have an "auto/man" switch, which I left in the "man" position {K-mount cameras have no ability to 'communicate with M42-mount lenses in any case). so the body simply measured the light coming in through the lens, set shutter speed to a corresponding value, and took the picture.

There it is. So people who use vintage lenses on their mirrorless cameras cannot in fact shoot aperture priority. It sounds like manual only, which is what I expected.

I use aperture priority with manual lenses on my R5 all the time! Works fine. Other approaches mentioned work fine also.
