I'm interested in lightening my travel load while on vacation. This last to Hawaii I found my D750 with 24-120 lens was getting heavy for me these days. I met someone while on vacation that had a Sony HX99 that looked very interesting. I love the huge zoom feature and its size and weight. I thought WOW this is my solution for a "travel" camera. I have no intentions of giving up my D750, I just want something for travel. After reading some reviews I'm concerned about its "low light" capability and noise in low-light situations. I was hoping to hear from an actual user and their opinion. In addition, if someone has a suggestion for another brand or model I sure would appreciate any advice you might have for me. I'm trying to keep the price below $1000.00 but that's not a deal breaker. Thanking you in advance for any replies.

Best overall pocket camera I have ever owned. I'm not a low light shooter as a rule, but never found fault when I did.

Thanks for the info...I hope to get more positive and negative if there are any about this before purchasing.

I had a Sony HX 99 and was not at all pleased with the image quality. I now shoot entirely with a Sony RX 100 m6 and am very pleased. You can check out my images if you would like to see what it can do. I also have a Sony HX 80 which is pretty good with a 750 zoom. It is much better for image quality than the 99, but not as good as the RX100. All are small cameras, and I have big hands, so it took a while to learn how to manipulate the settings (I shoot mostly in manual.) PM me if you have any additional questions.

If you are interested in buying one, I have one that I would sell. I bought it for times when I didn’t feel like lugging around my Fujifilm X-T2. I’ve used it a couple of times. It’s in like new condition. Purchased new at B&H.
I’ll sell it for $375 with an additional battery and battery charger (the camera does not come shipped with a charger). Plus shipping.
Send me a PM if interested. Rich

Thanks for the offer, however, I would prefer a new one...although you are offering it for a very fair price.

Someone posted a question about his HX-99 a few days ago. Maybe you can find his post.

Here it is. Ask him.

When I travel my Sony HX99 is always with me. 24-720 mm Ziess lens, pop up view finder, auto fill flash, rear screen tilts up for low angle shooting or all the way for selfies, shoots RAW, I have printed 20x30 prints without loss of sharpness. And best if all it fits into a pocket or belt pouch so you are hands free, a big thing in travel. You will thank me when you buy one. I leave mine on auto and the shots are fantastic. And it also shoots auto panoramic's four different ways. If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, put this guy in your pocket and travel right, travel lite.

I've read that it doesn't do such a good job with low-light photographs. Lots of blown-out highlights and noise. Have you experienced any of that kind of issues? The biggest thing holding me back from pulling the trigger is the bad wrap I read about low-light exposures. I'd love to hear and see about that issue. Thanks, Lane

Any camera with the small 1/2.3” sensor will have trouble with low light situation, especially if it’s dark or a dim indoor situation. Flash can compensate to a degree. Outdoors, of course, flash isn’t likely to help. It’s just the nature of the small sensor, and this will be held true for any camera, compact or bridge camera with that sensor. However, used in bright light, daylight, etc., it will do a great job as Bill Nikon has testified to. Unless shooting indoors or low light is your priority, the HX-99 should serve you well. It has a very good reputation.

If the results of the camera with a 1/2.3" sensor worry you, consider a 1" sensor. The choices (with viewfinder and large zoom range) are Sony RX100vii, or the much less expensive Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200. Canon makes the G5 X Mark II with a more limited zoom and funny pop-up viewfinder. I find the pocketables very handy but their flash is weak. There is the larger Sony RX10iv, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2500 or lesser DC-FZ1000 II.

There are more choices if you don't care about viewfinder or if a lesser zoom is adequate.

I bought one and loved it for some of the reasons you mention. It's a great little camera but that's the problem for me. I am 6'3" tall (6'2" at the end of the day) and I have very large hands. The little Sony just was not manageable for me. If your hands are more normally sized, I suspect you would be very happy with it.

I used a small Sony WX-9 a couple of weeks ago - no viewfinder. In the bright sun, it was a guessing game.

That camera has an HDR setting where it takes a series of images and then combines them. You get one straight image and one combined image. My low light images come out great.
