could you help me out in identifying this moth, please? Seen in SoCal coastal area. Weeded through the moth I.D. web site without encountering anything like it.

Tom is correct. Here is the White-Lined Sphinx Moth caterpillar (Hales lineata) on Hooker's Evening Primrose, and adult moth in-flight.
They hover above flowers, just like a hummingbird.

To add some additional info, there are several species commonly known as Hummingbird Moths there is one that is even called a Hummingbird Clearwing. All visit flowers in daytime and exhibit Hummingbird behavior.
By using Bug Guide and typing in Hummingbird you'll get dozens of photos of various species. For an in depth look at all species of Sphinx moths (or any other moth for that matter) go to Moth Photographers Group at http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/MainMenu.shtml
It is a very extensive site and can be difficult to navigate for newcomers, but tons of photos all with identification in mind.

thank you so much; I will spend some more time on the moth photography site; had looked before but, indeed, it was a bit difficult to bore down to what I was looking for. Always easier, once the bug is more defined.
