The obvious choice is sending it to Canon for service. That is what I would do. Is there a reason that you don't want to do that?

The two places I use for Canon lens repair are Canon and Authorized Camera Repair in Willow Grove PA.

There are a couple of questions that I would like to ask.

How old is the lens? Is it still in warranty?
What kind of repair is needed? Do you estimate the repair to be $2000 or more? Would you rather buy a new or refurb lens instead?

If it were still in warranty it should go to Canon, since they do warranty repairs. OP never mentioned EF or RF but is probably EF and new ones cost under $2000 and good used ones under $1000. From personal experience, if the lens requires a complete disassembly and parts, Canon charges around $600-$700 to repair a lens that costs around $2000 to replace. Unless the lens is really beat up, age for that lens shouldn't be an issue.

It would have been better to answer the question rather than think he did not already know all of that.

If your lens is more than a couple years old Canon will not repair it. I have used Royal Camera out of Illinois. It took about 3 weeks but the repair was done well as far as I can tell.

I am confused by the statement, by k9moe "I can send my lens to get looked at and possibly repair if needed." Looked at??? is it causing problems... ???

Just checked on Ebay... $450 + $60 shipping, $50 one year warranty. MPB.com has one for $320 free shipping and 6 months warranty. Hardly worth the cost of repair quoted by rmorrison1116, " Canon charges around $600-$700 to repair a lens that costs around $2000 to replace.

I am not sure how complicated the innards of this lens are compared to a Minolta macro I found at a thrift shop for $10 with obvious mold inside the outer glass. I paid $20 for a spanner wrench, removed the glass and cleaned it, lens is clean and image excellent on my Sony A-65. I have two $20 Nikon 1 10-30mm that have a "dark" problem that I will soon do an autopsy and like my hero Dr Frankenstein bring back to life. Fun.

There are take apart to fix videos on YouTube even for k9moe Canon 70-200 lens. Just purchased a Nikon 1 J1 to convert to full spectra "IR" camera. The 10-30 mm lens is defective $20 free shipping the focus unit is $15 from china, possible cable for $18, or just the gear for $2. Screwdriver set under $10. Looks to be about 3 hours of fun fixing it. I found many take apart videos that show step-wise, and also a "text" with photos which i printed out... Bake-a-Cake lens repair step-wise.

So, k9moe, if you buy a used one, that is a good choice. Then google "taking apart a Canon 70mm-200mm" and have some fun and UHH bragging rights. Then sell one of the two working lenses and make a profit.

Many others just for Googling "Canon 70mm-200mm take apart"

I as well used Royal Camera after dropping my Canon 70/200mm l series lens. I was really pleased with their work, the focus ring needed replacing. After sending it in they give an estimated cost to repair, the only cost to the customer is the shipping if they decide not to repair. Turn around time on mine was a total of 10 days. Hopefully I never have to use their service again, but if I do it will go to them.

Who told you that? I've sent lenses that were 15+ years old to Canon for repairs. Also, OP is in NY and Authorized Camera Repair is in PA, and possibly one of the best independent camera repair shops in PA and it's a lot closer to NY than IL so shipping would be less expensive.

Assuming that the lens is NOT the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L which would be relatively new, less likely to need repair and might even be under warranty...

A lot depends upon EXACTLY WHICH of Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lenses needs repair. There have been four of them:

- EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM... with no image stabilization (IS). This is the oldest model (1995), but still in production as the lower cost alternative ($1349 US). Likely to be repairable, but also widely available used at relatively low cost to replace.

- EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS USM... first version with IS. Introduced in 2001 and discontinued at least 12 years ago, it may not be possible to get this repaired by Canon. It might be possible to get it fixed by an independent shop.

- EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II... superseded the 1st model with IS in 2010, so some copies of this version are now getting up in age too. However, it was still in production until about four years ago, so is likely but not guaranteed, to be repairable by Canon themselves. In most cases Canon is able to repair lenses only four years out of production, but there have been a few where that wasn't the case (they discontinued repair of the EF 200mm f/1.8L just 2 or 3 years after discontinuation). You'll need to ask them, if you want Canon to do the repair. Any warranty would have expired by now. It might be possible... and less expensive... to have it repaired by an independent shop.

- EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III... superseded the 2nd model with IS in 2018 and currently in production, might even still be covered by a warranty. No doubt Canon's service dept. is able to repair this model. It also might be repairable by an independent shop.
