I used a Nikon 18 - 135 zoom, so i'd say about 5 feet in front of him. I wasn't too worried about him coming after me, as he waited for me to get out of my truck and get into position. He's not poisonous, so I wasn't too scared.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but that head-on shot looks like a pit viper(specifically a rattlesnake.) Can't see the shape of his head well but believe I can see the "pits" in front of his eyes, hence the name pit viper, all of which are definitely poisonous! You got to wonder what he must have been thinking when you streached out on the ground 5 ft. in front of him!!
